The old one survived Loma Prieta, only one fatality, and that was in the aftermath. Mind you, the upper deck did fall onto the lower deck.
Actually, there have probably been more fatalities during the reconstruction. Most notably was the truck that drove straight off the bridge at the S bend.
Much as I like the cantilever section, I am looking forward to our new one, I believe it's a single tower cable stayed bridge, they just look so nice.
