Catherine Tate

Catherine Tate is a genius. It's unbelievable that it's the same woman playing the teenager and the old woman.

She is so perfect. Even just the way she is sitting is reflecting the character and the age of the character.

In the Catherine Tate show she plays a dozen different recurrent characters, occurring in short sketches. Some of them I don't find too interesting, but the best ones are unique and hysterical.

(Sadly it seems the Catherine Tate show is not yet available widely world wide.)

Many haven't, which is the reason for this post.

Maybe. But can she play Paris Hilton? Hunh? Hunh?
Didn't think so.

Pluh. I live in the UK, and Tate's show appears on our free digital channel BBC 3, known for broadcasting new comedies. A few years back there was a show called "Little Britain", which was a huge phenomenom at one point, though it outstayed its welcome by the third series and I don't think its got the staying power of, say, The Office, funny tho it was.

Tate's show falls into the same mode. A lot of people seem to like it, but personally I've never found it funny, and neither have any of my friends. The sketches just seem stretched out too long, too repetitive and not that funny. There's a new BBC3 sketch show just come out called "Touch Me I'm Karen Taylor", which (IMO) is even worse. Taylor just takes some potentially interesting idea for a sketch and then follows the most obvious route for jokes, usually crass sexual humour. But maybe you'll like her if you like Tate, it's good that we're all different ;)

As for me, I prefer comedies like Peep Show or Little Britain, so I've got quite different tastes. I do wonder if I'm unconciously sexist in that my favourite comedians are all male, but maybe it's just that there aren't many funny women getting a break. Anyway, Catherine's the media darling over here so I doubt she cares what I think. She even appeared in a sketch with Tony Blair!

Great blog btw

Thank you.

I liked Catherine Tate series 2.
But I thought Little Britain series 2 fell flat.

I should say I think about several of Catherine's characters are not interesting. I think many would say that, but we would disagree about which ones!

If she used the same characters/sketch ideas in a series three, that would definitely stretch it.

BTW, what's a "pluh"?

Well, if HE's not very funny, that doesn't mean the man's contagious! :-)

I was quite disgruntled about Schwarzenegger for some time. Then he started doing some good things as a Governor. (Like sending Paris to Prison, do not pass go, do not collect 200 Ibs of glitter.) I wouldn't call everybody who's been in a movie with him a loser, anyway.
Especially the actors with big muscles!!!
