Adam Hughes girls

Comic artist and writer Adam Hughes feels he is being pigeon-holed as a drawer (that word is OK) of pretty girls. I think it's the problem of doing one thing "too well". People want more of it. When he is not doing girls, he's once again down at the level of competing with hundreds of other talents equally, and that's of course a bucket of cold water.

These guys often get trapped in a commercial style. If you look at his website, even his sketchbook is filled with comic book style drawings even when they're nothing to do with that. They're still in that style. I like the paintings of Michael Whelan, but even when he's painting for himself they still have a too-polished book cover feel.

I've always varied my style a lot, I get bored easily. But then I rarely had much commercial success as a painter. (There were a couple of good months in the nineties.) I think a well-rehearsed and recognizable style is probably good for the bank account.
