Actually, the hand-girl is very shy, not at all what you'd expect from the story. (I once glimpsed that anime, in original japanese soundtrack with subtitles. Long story.) The guy is a badass-cool invincible fighter... until he has to hide his embarrassing secret.
Then again... maybe you're right, and it's all just metaphorical about manliness! ;-)
