I think over-cooked style is in favor of consumers due to the lighting and color gamma in Wall Mart etc. They like acidious colors and mercury lights with lots of UV just increase their saturation even more. We have a complete generation brought up in such palettes. No wonder they want to see those colors in photos too.

I've never seen a natural sky with quite that intense a blue, and that grass looks unnaturally green, too. I'm assuming that's what you mean...
Painting the real world to suit ourselves may be fun, but it's fake. That's in the same category as those airbrushed centerfolds in Playboy. Nice, but imaginary.
I am really wondering why Anonymous is staying anonymous. It is so easy to make up any fake name on internet! And so impolite not to sign a negative comment. I don't think it is impolite to criticize, it can always lead to discussion. But not to sign... It is weird.

Anyway, in my view, any interpretation of art is as valid as any other.
I'd be curious what the author would think of your interpretation, though. I'm pretty sure she meant the picture to be a perfect fantasy of innocent and careless summer play. And maybe the over-saturated colors may have backfired, because saturation means dark.

As far as being conflicted, sometimes the over-cooked can be artistic -- other are just garish.

The movement of the child is awkward and not posed. He is not smiling or looking at the camera. It makes the picture very natural to me.
The colors give a distance to it. It makes me feel like before a storm.
For me, there is not much sugar on this picture. The atmosphere is threatening.

I like this work, I dont know where it says it has to be realistic or not fake. I enjoyed the other works on that site as well.

Well, I checked, the title is "Serene Childhood", with explanation like :
"Children are not afraid to experiment, to try something new. They are not afraid to fall.
For them life's a game and they just have fun!"
So, in my case, saturation backfired! My feelings are quite far from what the author wanted. But I do like the picture. :-)
