Sunrise

(As usual, click on image to get larger version.)
God bless image stabilization (Vibration Reduction as Nikon calls it). This was taken handheld, leaning out a window in a awkward position, in twilight, with a 300mm equivalent lens, at 1/90sec.
A few seconds after I took this one, the lamp turned off.

300mm...

1/90th of a sec....

Excellent...The shot looks very sharp...

If your image stabilizer on your Nikon is the cause of this sharp image I salute the inventors of such a wonderful resource...I have been taking pictures for over 55 years now with all kinds of cameras and lens but I have never had an image stabilizer other than a tripod, bean bag,or frind's shoulder ....

My next camera will have to have one... (I've read about how it works but I still don't understand the mechanics...)

Long focal lens... plus slow shutter speed... plus hand held camera... equals... "a sharp image", does not compute.

There must be some sort of "Magic" here...

It's nice to have such patient friends, isn't it? :-)

In case one day you're alone without a bean bag, remember: trees are our friends too (hint, hint!).

[Sorry about the offtopic post.]

Eolake, I know you will be following Apple's announcements tomorrow. Could I ask you to not post anything concerning that until the keynote video has been made available on Apple's website? This typically happens later on the same day.

Some of us like to remain 'spoiler free' and see the presentation fresh. It's more exciting that way.

BTW, the way to steer clear of any news but still be informed about the availability of the video is to periodically check this page.

Uncle Ron: It *is* almost magical. Sometimes I've succeeded with sharp images at 1/30 second with that long lens!
To stops gain is normal, sometimes three.

Through The Lens: I prefer to watch the "virgin" video myself too. (And I don't mean Madonna's video.)

Madonna's still a virgin??? {:-O

Said the robin to the sparrow, “I should really like to know, Why these anxious human beings Rush about and worry so.” Said the sparrow to the robin, “Friend I think that it must be, That they have no Heavenly Father, Such as cares for you and me.”

This beautiful photo reminded me of this poem I had read years ago as a boy. Isn't it wonderful how beautiful God made the sun and sky?

Of course she is. With a name like Madonna, her daughter has to have been a virgin birth.

1/90TH is actually rather fast, no?

Eolake Stobblehouse said...

It is a good enough speed for hand-held photography with a normal lens or a wideangle, but this was a longish telephoto lens, and traditionally you'd like to have like 1/500sec to use such a lens.
(It's a 200mm lens on a APS sized sensor, meaning it is equivalent to 300mm on a 35mm camera.)

Quite the poem Sir Terry. Do you know who wrote it?

It was Elizabeth Chaney - 1859.
