Is Your Child A Goth?

(Thanks to Pascal.) This is either funny or tragic. I don't know if the article is for real, but I would not be surprised.
So many things are too funny, apparently it is a "sign your child is goth" if:
* He or she claims to be one! (Never be afraid of pointing out the obvious.)
* He or she masturbates. (Yes, that should catch quite a few of the elusive buggers.)
* Wants some time without adult supervision. (No kids ever wanted that before the Goth culture corrupted them.)

Actually on consideration I think it's a spoof, though a good one. I doubt even the most radical soul saver would classify "philosophy" as a "dangerous cult".

Update: You know, the surefire way to change your child's mind about being a goth would be to become one yourself. In a town with middle-aged goths walking the streets, the black and white make-up would be off those kids faces faster than you can say "Kenny G rocks".

-------
Is Your Child a Goth?

Listed below are some warning signs to indicate if your child may have gone astray from the Lord. Gothic (or goth) is a very obscure and often dangerous culture that young teenagers are prone to participating in. The gothic culture leads young, susceptible minds into an imagined world of evil, darkness, and violence. Please seek immediate attention through counselling, prayer, and parental guidance to rid your child of Satan's temptations if five or more of the following are applicable to your child.

-Frequently wears black clothing.
-Wears band and/or rock t-shirts.
-Wears excessive black eye makeup, lipstick or nail polish.
-Wears any odd silver jewelry or symbols.
-Shows an interest in piercings or tattoos.
-Listens to gothic or any other anti-social genres of music. (Marilyn Manson claims to be the anti-Christ, and publicly speaks against the Lord. Please discard any such albums IMMEDIATELY.)

-Associates with other people that dress, act or speak eccentrically.
-Shows a declining interest in wholesome activities, such as: the Bible, prayer, church or sports.

-Shows an increasing interest in death, vampires, magic, the occult, witchcraft or anything else that involves Satan.
-Takes drugs.

-Drinks alcohol.
-Is suicidal and/or depressed.
-Cuts, burns or partakes in any other method of self-mutilation.(This is a Satanic ritual that uses pain to detract from the light of God and His love. Please seek immediate attention for this at your local mental health center.)
-Complains of boredom.
-Sleeps too excessively or too little.
-Is excessively awake during the night.
-Demands an unusual amount of privacy.
-Spends large amounts of time alone.
-Requests time alone and quietness. (This is so that your chid may speak to evil sprits through meditation.)
-Insists on spending time with friends while unaccompanied by an adult.
-Disregards authority figures; teachers, priests, nuns and elders are but a few examples of this.

-Misbehaves at school.
-Misbehaves at home.
-Eats excessively or too little
-Eats goth-related foods. Count Dracula cereal is an example of this.
-Drinks blood or expresses an interest in drinking blood. (Vampires believe this is how to attain Satan. This act is very dangerous and should be stopped immediately.)

-Watches cable television or any other corrupted media sources. (Ask your local church for proper programs that your child may watch.)
-Plays videos games that contains violence or role-playing nature.
-Uses the internet excessively and frequently makes time for the computer.
-Makes Satanic symbols and/or violently shakes head to music.
-Dances to music in a provocative or sexual manner.
-Expresses an interest in sex.

-Masturbates.
-Is homosexual and/or bisexual.
-Pursues dangerous cult religions. Such include: Satanism, Scientology, Philosophy, Paganism, Wicca, Hinduism and Buddhism. -
Wears pins, stickers or anything else that contains these various phrases: "I'm so gothic, I'm dead", "woe is me", "I'm a goth".
-Claims to be a goth.

If five or more of these apply to your child, please intervene immediately. The gothic culture is dangerous and Satan thrives within it. If any of these problems persist, enlist your child into your local mental health center.

Alex called out:
Soccer spent many a happy decade being a fun sport, then in the 80's it became a gathering place for thugs, the honorable team rivalry being replaced by gang violence.

There is always a fringe of bad apples which spoil the proverbial it for the rest. They are the ones that get noticed, and the popular press and popular opinion takes on the prejudice.

My parents are concerned about the internet, they've seen how even the most innocent of sites like "Friends Reunited UK" have been used for mischief, libel and slander. I know I've found some interesting lost friends, and just one or two abuses of the system have lead to a media barrage showing the frailty of the system.

There's a very powerful anti-prejudice song on Pink Floyds "The Wall", the lyrics if taken out of context of the album, can be mistaken as inciting hate crime, instead of being a blatant parody. "The Wall" is a film full of depression, suicidal tendency, self mutilation and violence. It carries very powerful messages, but any part of it can be taken out of context and misconstrued, and seen simply as glorified violence and licentious behavior.

Here's an interesting point, the main figure in "The Wall" was portrayed by the punk rock star Bob Geldof KBE, formerly of the boom town rats. That is KBE as in Knigh t of the Order of the British Empire for humanitarian works, a punk rock star!

Another famous humanitarian is Bono, an Irish rock star from a band called U2, a band which started by covering punk bands such as The Ramones.

Punks were regarded with more fear an suspicion in the 80's then Goths are now.

Funny old world. Don't judge a book by its cover, or even which shelf it's on.

I scored 17. I guess that makes me a goth, perhaps even a Visigoth.

My only question, as a cereal fan, is where can I get that Count Dracula cereal they mention? I have never heard of that brand.

I think that God in creating Man somewhat overestimated his ability. --Oscar Wilde

Lol wow. That's a really accurate description of virtually every young person in America. My personal favorite's the Count Dracula cereal, that's too much. A few of the last ones sound a little too out there for it to be legit(seriously, Hinduism's goth?), but like you said, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it is.

From other things I've seen along this same line, I can actually believe this isn't a spoof -- sad as that might be. Sounds an aweful lot like a Jack Chick tract.

Hey, my Goth CD's don't have antisocial lyrics, but then again Sisters of Mercy is pretty lightweight.

I'm a little disappointed to see that my kids aren't Goths, does this test apply to 5 and 9 yr olds?

Well, I prefer to pleade the Fifth!
For some reason, in France, an Ostrogoth is considered worse.

Lol, that'd be hilarious if it did.

Yeah, I'm surprised the goth subculture always gets a bad wrap. Most of the goth music I've heard(which isn't a lot honestly) sounds more life-affirming if anything.

LOL! Just leave the kids alone... once they actually start mutilating themselves or actually drinking blood, then I'd start to worry. Otherwise... they'll figure it out, I'm sure.

This is one of my favorite spoofs of all time: http://www.adequacy.org/stories/2001.12.2.42056.2147.html

You laugh at murder and wickedness? Leave the kids alone? That's the reason they are the way they are.
With that attitude our society will sink even deeper into decay. Your words are disturbing. But some feel this way and then are shocked when kids are thrown into prison and commit suicide because nobody took the time to council them on decency or moral obligations.
Just leave them alone huh? Remember that the next time you see a group of arian gangs that are marching down the street with swastikas tattoed on their forearms and carrying concealed weapons.
Your comments are sad. But don't complain when you see the halloween crowd in July huddled in a corner burning a police car just for laughs.

Just the leave the kids alone.

Anonymous said...

No offense Witness, but I think you rather missed Hannah's point. No one's suggesting we just ignore our kids if they're becoming dangerous, I believe she just means let them be themselves. How do you define decency? What's moral? I don't think a little eye shadow makes someone a bad person.

Anonymous said...

witness said: "... because nobody took the time to council them on decency or moral obligations."

Wow ... "moral obligations" ... that must be the scariest concept I've ever heard.

Hannah said...

Thanks Jes, that's what I meant. For me, burning police cars falls in the same category as self mutilation. But if they want to wear eye shadow? Listen to rock/goth? Stay up all night? Fine. Let them. Eye shadow is self expression, music is personal taste. And if they start getting bad grades because of staying up too late, then it's time to work on discipline. But I don't believe that they'll become themselves if they're thought for and not given the room for expression.

TTL,
I seem to recall a cereal called Count Chocula, a parody of the famous vampire, with bat-shaped marshmallows. Maybe that's the one they meant?
Although the red-colored one was Franken Berries...

Um... tell me, how can I see these weapons if they are concealed? I'm very interested.
You see, I'm thinking of joining the police academy and that skill would come in handy. Might help me avoid ending up in a cheap movie comedy series about outlandish police cadets.

It starts with a little eye shadow, and before you know it, they're sneaking after hours in the school's corridors in the company of a girl and another boy, searching for the Dark Lord He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Next thing you know, they'll end up on the front news and disgrace the fine name of Hogwarts worldwide, dragging the headmaster into their most hazardous covert speleology activities.
What's next? Witchcraft? Talking to snakes? Training clandestine underage milicias? Trespassing into a classified Ministry building? Brewing unlicensed body-altering chemicals? Flying on brooms bludgeoning canonballs? I shudder at the possibilities...

I've heard worse. But the Doctor says my therapy is beginning to overcome the trauma and I'll soon quit fearing the sunlight and start eating solid foods that don't run away. "Blah! I don't drink... wine."

"The room for expression"?
I hear this is what they called interrogation chambers in Abu Ghraib...
"Oh, woe is me, I'm as good as dead!"

Yeah, I'm surprised the goth subculture always gets a bad wrap.

Let's see, they wear black lipstick, wear satantic signs, talk about death, paint their faces clown white, rejoice over dark culture, practice strange rituals and you say, they always get a bad rap.
What part of this don't you understand?

See, that's exactly what I'm talking about. All these things you just mentioned are just innocent self-expression(or trying to fit in at the worst), and some of it's down-right inaccurate. The goth culture has never claimed to be satanic, and I've never heard of them practicing strange rituals. None of what you mentioned is hurting anybody, I believe most people get into it simply because they like the imagery and the artwork.

If you really still believe the goth culture is something bad, get any of AFI's last four CDs(I wouldn't call them a goth band per se, but I'd say their song writing is goth-influenced at least). Pay attention to the lyrics. If you can find something destructive or anti-social in that kind of poetry, then I give up.

Hey witness and open-your-eyes, I am starting to get your point. Given your expertise, I'd need some help ...

Take a look at this video. It is a song by one of my favourite bands.

Do you think they are wearing too much eye-liner? Does this belong to "anti-social genres of music" (many of my friends dig this too)?

Am I at risk of getting "lost" when digging this band? Is this suitable material for a 43 year old (I am very childish for my age)?

Should I seek supervision (to see more clearly), or should I delist from my institution? (Remember, I scored 17 in Dr. Pascal's gothedness questionnaire.)

TTL,
Alas, politically, Ségolène Royal is hollow. Elegant, nice-looking, a dazzling smile, undoubtedly. But zero savvy. I love the idea of a woman president. Just not THIS one. I'd feel like voting for a beauty pageant, litterally. When a candidate's main campaign argument is "I am a woman, and it's time for one", me starts worry.
Not that I much fancy the Madeleine Albright style either!!!

Anyway, you're likely to see much more of her if she ends up as leader of the opposition. :-)

I myself dream of her opponent picking for Prime Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie, current Minister of Defense. Now, there's a woman with class AND know-how for the position. Probably the experience of the years?

Incidentally, this is no fib: I almost ended up being the grandson of a french female Minister, Edith Cresson. My mom's rural family was very poor, and Cresson wanted to adopt her. It's a small world indeed...
(Of course, I am related -distantly- to a Lebanese elected politician. Like most of this tiny country's population!)
"Too smal to be split, too big to be swallowed."

Perhaps it is the pressure of almost being famous twice that made me a certified Goth (according to this check-list)?

I just had to let these comments come out:

-Frequently wears black clothing.
Please remind me, what color are cassocks usually?

-Wears any odd silver jewelry or symbols.
Priests don't wear any trinkets or jewels, everybody knows that.

-Associates with other people that dress, act or speak eccentrically.
A guy wearing a red robe and speaking latin on Sundays, is that eccentric enough for you?

-Shows a declining interest in wholesome activities, such as: the Bible, prayer, church or sports.
Sorry: on Sunday, you gotta choose between baseball and church. What if I'm no sports fan? Then I need to be locked away, for sure.

-Shows an increasing interest in death, vampires, magic, the occult, witchcraft or anything else that involves Satan.
Don't priests believe in Satan and talk about him a lot? Should we lock them away too and throw the key?

-Drinks alcohol.
What about communion wine, does that count? BTW, remind me, did Jesus turn water into wine, or into Perrier?

-Is suicidal and/or depressed.
Unless you smoke the carpet, you won't stay merry every minute. Unless you have any efficient non-chemical method...

-Cuts, burns or partakes in any other method of self-mutilation.
What about those fanatics in the Philippines, who get themselves crucified for Easter, do they count too?

-Complains of boredom.
And how, pray tell, can one avoid getting bored to death in a convent, doing nuthin' all day long?

-Sleeps too excessively or too little.
Do they also want to measure my urine output on a full moon night? What does too much or too little mean, exactly? Do naps count?

-Is excessively awake during the night.
My teenage neighbors love to party in the summer, stereo blaring, windows open because of the heat, until 4 A.M. It's not my fault, your Honor!

-Demands an unusual amount of privacy.
Define "unusual amount". For instance, when I've got diarrhea, I don't very much like to have company. So sue me.

-Spends large amounts of time alone.
So much for all the world's bachelors then...

-Requests time alone and quietness. (This is so that your chid may speak to evil sprits through meditation.)
Beacuse, as everybody knows, one only prays well when listening to heavy metal...

-Insists on spending time with friends while unaccompanied by an adult.
Do you know many adults who want to chat about PS2 or Manga??? Apart from Dr. Pascal, maybe.

-Disregards authority figures; teachers, priests, nuns and elders are but a few examples of this.
Yes Father, no Auntie, yes Sister, no Grampa (especially since you have Alzheimer's).
Mark Foley, now there's a wholesome role model and authority figure.

-Misbehaves at school.
-Misbehaves at home.

Unless you smoke the carpet, good luck with these two... Some over-the-counter Ritalin, perhaps?

-Eats excessively or too little
So, if I don't like sauerkraut and escargots, my goose is cooked...

-Eats goth-related foods. Count Dracula cereal is an example of this.
And if I eat "Coco Puffs", I'm a commie for sure?!?

-Drinks blood or expresses an interest in drinking blood. (Vampires believe this is how to attain Satan. This act is very dangerous and should be stopped immediately.)
"Take and drink, for this is my blood", Matthew 26, 28! So who's saying it's a no-no? The priests? I'm lost.

-Watches cable television or any other corrupted media sources. (Ask your local church for proper programs that your child may watch.)
Ah, gosh darn it! No more CNN and ESPN, then? But I thought sport was wholesome...

-Uses the internet excessively and frequently makes time for the computer.
It's a good thing I'm reading this on THE INTERNET! Smart advice, Einstein!

-Makes Satanic symbols and/or violently shakes head to music.
Shaking the head? A satanic act? And how do I sneeze then? Can you also do tricks with your ears, mister?

-Dances to music in a provocative or sexual manner.
No risk there. I couldn't dance to save my life. Or my soul. I inherited my daddy's talent and singing voice.

-Expresses an interest in sex.
-Masturbates.

Well, d'uh! GOD didn't design us for this! BTW, how do we breed? It's not explained in the catalogue...

-Is homosexual and/or bisexual.
Having nothing to do in their Boston seminars, no wonder they... no comment.

-Pursues dangerous cult religions. Such include: Satanism, Scientology, Philosophy, Paganism, Wicca, Hinduism and Buddhism.
Strangely, they don't mention anything about Islam. No wonder, if they haven't been watching TV, especially the news... since September 2001!
What's Wicca? The beliefs of wicked kids?

If five or more of these apply to your child, please intervene immediately. The gothic culture is dangerous and Satan thrives within it. If any of these problems persist, enlist your child into your local mental health center.
I'm expecting very long waiting lines...

Whatever Pascal was saying went unchecked because no one here speaks french so it's irrelevant to the discussion because it's not understandable. Not a smart move Doc.

The goth culture has never claimed to be satanic, and I've never heard of them practicing strange rituals.

Well Jess they do. I know some goths and what I could tell you would shock you. But I understand your lack of knowledge on the Goth.

"Well Jess they do. I know some goths and what I could tell you would shock you. But I understand your lack of knowledge on the Goth."

*shrug* I'm not easily shocked. They could be having orgies for all I care, just so long no one's getting killed or raped.

What I know is that the goth movement started with the music, and the goth music I've heard(Siouxie and the Banshees, etc.) is about as pretty and innocent as anything I've heard. I know people who dress like that, and they're perfectly normal. I'm not saying there's not some people who claim to be "goth" who don't do weird stuff like that, but let's be realistic. Your average "goth" is going to spend more time in coffee shops and listening to poetry recitings.

And the word "evil" should be limited to fantasy and sci-fi movies. Lol, how'd I get so wrapped up in this conversation? I don't even like goofy labels like this.

Chuck Ree said: "What's Wicca? The beliefs of wicked kids?"

Wicca is a modern pagan religion. It has its roots partly in witchcraft, but some say it also derives ideas from Thelema (a philosophy made popular by Aleister Crowley). Like paganism in general, Wicca gets its esthetics and symbolism from the nature. It appears to me that Wicca is most popular among young women, but I may be wrong. The Wiccan moral code is: "Do what you like so long as you harm no one"

From an FBI report on the first Elvis Presley live concert: "Totally obscene. Mimics copulatory movements on his microphone pole [that patented hip swing!], and has the female audience in complete out-of-control hysteria. A public insult to decency."

(Sorry, no reference to back this up, I saw it on TV, you'll have to take my word for it.)

As long as it's not proven to be physically harmful (that split tongue trend comes to mind...) and doesn't turn you into a criminal, I'm for the Lennon attitude, dude.
And regarding crime, let's remember not to confuse a symptom and a cause. Anti-social individuals will tend to go for socially controversial stuff for the sake of it.
It would seem that the Virginia Tech shooter didn't play Doom or Grand Theft Auto. Otherwise, I would've heard about it again and again. However... he DID have very easy access to REAL firearms, not simulated videogame ones.
Hmm... Shootings, real firearms... Is it just me, or is there some kind of pattern here?...

Some eccentric fellow named Michael Moore claimed the real issues in the US were being deliberately concealed behind brandished scarecrows. Perhaps he's not so crazy after all.

Are videogames and Goth/Metal/Punk music what really kills? Are they the true evil? Are there more teen pregnancies among educated youngsters, or in those left in ignorance, sometimes deliberately? Is religion a ritualistic thing to be integrally assimilated and followed blindly, or principles to understand, life guidelines?

I come from a believing family. I received a religious education in school, which I believe was an excessive one. I don't fancy rock, heavy metal or Goth music very much. I love reading, essentially books with no pictures. Most of my videogaming for the last year was kiddie stuff to entertain my pre-school nephew. Heck, I don't even care that much for masturbation! And yet, it would seem a certain category of people perceive me as a spawn of Satan the Atheist, or something of the sort. (Okay, I'm exaggerating a little here!) But I can't help wonder: where did my upbringing go wrong? Why did I not become automatically pious, well-behaved and "like everybody else"? And why don't I reject belief and faith in God, only a certain style of worship?
It can't be that I was possessed by the Demon as an infant: I was baptised, and believe me, Orthodox baptism does NOT go cheap on holy water! Total immersion, three times, no less. (Almost an overdose, yo!)

So, either I'm missing something about loving my neighbor and being a decent guy, or maybe, just MAYBE, I'm not truly that astray.
Just a dumb supposition. ;-)

Oh and about that french talk earlier on? That was atrociously obscene stuff, naturally. Translated it straight from one of Borat Sagdiyev's kazakh rants, something to do with illegal coitus, spilling bodily fluids, or speaking backwards, can't remember which one exactly.
No matter, any automatic translation internet engine will tell you just how rude that was. Since I'm a pitiful doomed soul anyway, might as well deserve my Afterlife, right?

Hey, I feel like swearing a bit, just for the fine of offending fun people (or the other way round):
Shazbat! Poit! Flark! Smoo! Tarnation! Dang! X-rated! Dagnabbit! Potrzebie! To blazes with moderators! What the hey! Curses! [CENSORED BY SERVER]!!!!!

You are welcome. Interestingly, on the same day you brought up Wiccas here, big media ran a story about Wiccas and their emblem, the pentagram. According to the story, starting this day it is now approved to engrave this symbol on veterans’ headstones in the U.S.

Now, what puzzles me is this. As I mentioned above, the Wiccan moral code is: "Do what you like so long as you harm no one". So, how does this issue in the news story (covered by 243 mediums according to Google) even arise?

The Crüxshadows -- Leave Me Alone

Leave me alone- I'm a freak
leave me alone- make it easy for yourself
everywhere I go they all stare
I don't understand why they care
they stare at me in all black
and when I turn they stare at my back
all these things can't,
all these things don't--
let me go.
Leave me alone- I'm a freak
leave me alone- make it easy for yourself
everywhere I go they all stare
I don't understand why they care
and I don't want to be a part of your world
and I don't want to see the things you see
can't you understand how I feel?
can't you let me be?

Please, leave me alone
Please, leave me alone
Please, leave me alone
Please, leave me alone

How on earth can the religions like Buddhism and Hinduism be called to be 'Satanic?' I think its a propaganda to make Christianity the only religion in this world. I am a Hindu and feel very DEEPLY outraged over this. Are Lord Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, Lakshmi, Ganesha, and Hanuman all satans. We Hindus could also give our children advises to consider Jesus as a 'Satan.' However, we don't. I am not actually tellin' that Christianity is bad there are some extremists like these advisers who prtend to be protecting there children.

About sexual moves, does that mean that belly-dancing is Satanic? I seem to acquire positive values after watching female doing a dance with sexual moves.

Black clothing.
Its just a matter of choice.

Spends time meditating.
Its universally known that most people acquire peace out of meditation. I am not sayin' it because its the origination from our religion but because its a matter of fact. Throughout times, people many have become good from bad through meditation. One can control lust by doing so, its true since, I myself have tried it.

It seems like for Islam, Christianity also has osme fanatics which also same for Hinduism or any other religions in this world.

I am praying tom eradicate fanatism and replace peace.
