Lunar eclipse by Laurie Jeffery

Laurie has allowed me to post this spectacular picture he took of the moon two days ago. (Click on it for a larger version.)

He writes:
Here's that moon you mentioned in your blog. We went up to that pub I took you and Greg to and I snapped this off from the car park for you. It was a luna eclipse at 7:56 PM and that dark area at the top of the moon is the shadow of our earth. It was the closest past the moon will make to the earth for the next sixteen years. Perran will be 21 years old then. The picture is un-retouched.

I wish I could write as well as I shoot.

Well, that would definitely be something to see... :-)
"Shoot, man!" Don't beat yourself up too much, it's very hard to excell at everything.

This is indeed a fantastic shot!

Wow, what an amazing shot. Everybody has their own medium to express themselves - yours is clearly photography. :)

I wish I could take good pictures after dark - my hands aren't steady enough for the time the shutter needs to be open. And I'm too lazy to grab a little tripod most of the time.

Laurie told me that for this one he used one of those bags with peas or similar in it to support the camera, on top of the car.

And by the way, more and more cameras and lenses are getting anti-shake technology, which is a god sent.

Hi folks,
I'm delighted you like the shot. I did a write-up on how it came about, here.

Eolake,
I hope Laurie does not object that I use his picture as a background on my Blackberry.

Being a photographer, when I have the time and money, I love good shots, and know how rare it is to get a really great shot like that. I decided I wanted to look at it every time I opened my Blackberry.

I found a theme that complemented it and loaded that as well. My specialty in photography is Black and white, I used to shoot infrared until the last developer of infrared in this area had a breakdown in his non infrared 2 and 1/4 machine and got out of doing it. B&W does not work well on a tiny screen. Somehow detail is lost on a screen that small.

Seeing this, I may try some simply composed B&W just to see what it looks like. Here I go, gonna get my big weights out again. At least I am not taking a Mamiya RB out in the field again. almost broke it.

I don't think my camera has anything like anti-shake technology - I work with a Canon A510. A friend of mine who's into photography recommended it, and I'm glad he did. There's enough room for me to learn with, but I can also use the standard modes when I feel like it. I think anything with anti-shake technology is probably going to be out of my price range. :)
