Movie slider

[Thanks to EOSHD]
A guy built a dirt-cheap movie "slider" ("camera dolly", Mike says it's called) for his Panasonic GH1 still/video camera. The resulting moving-camera vids look very nice. Not a long track, though.

LOVED that! VERY COOL!! I was wondering how the movements are kept so constant/smooth. Could that be manual, I wonder.

I've been quite fascinated by and wanting to see the technology that goes into working same at the Olympics. Looks very cool!!

I think the correct technical term is a 'camera dolly'. Pity I could not enjoy the movie on the website as it was constantly interrupted and stuttering - I'll have to try when the 'net is a bit quieter.

I think you are correct about the term, I could not think of it.

Maybe that's just how long his bedroom is. ;-)

A dolly shot is to follow action or movement taking place. Nice video - could have been shot with Glidecam with smoother results.

TCGirl - a lot of the 'follow' shots at the 'limpics are done with SteadyCAM. Really nice technology - I use Glidecam for simple video running images - usually in two takes - one with the subject as an object in the shot, and the second run with CU motion shots to be later used as inserts.

My new site coming soon.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

Now, I wish I knew the lingo! ;-) "CU"?

Great! We'll keep a look-out for it's debut!! Thanks for letting us know! :-)

Robb, what's a glidecam?

Eolake:

Check out http://www.glidecam.com

Basically, it's a simple system to allow smooth movement of a videocam while the subject is moving.

I have two of them - an old version and a newer version.

Oh yes, I know those. It's quite interesting that you can use such a system to smooth out movement. It's not clear to me exactly how it works, but then I've not seen one in real life.

The operators are amazing, I don't think I could do it. Like the Russian film, Russian Arc, two hours in one long glidecam shot!!

My pal Laurie Jeffery is good, he's my age, 47, and he will tire out guys half his age when they carry the disk.

You are not 47, yet, Eo! Either you are "jumping the gun" or...you have entirely forgotten that you are only 46...until March 9th! :-)

Yes, I wondered about that for a sec, but I guess I didn't care enough to actually do the 'reth.
