School spies on students

[Thanks Neeraj]
School used student laptop webcams to spy on them at school and home, post.

Not only did they use the webcams to spy on the kids at home, but they used it as evidence to discipline a kid for "inappropriate behavior at home"!!! Are we in the twilight zone here? I don't know if that's more nasty, or more plain stupid.

Wow. I'm not even sure how to respond to that. It's frightening, I can't believe something like this could be legal.

I don't think it is.

A gym owner in England was sentenced for having a spy camera taking pictures of princess Diana working out.

And I know in Denmark at least it's illegal to make voice recordings of people without their knowledge. Probably here in UK too, since phone menus always warn you that you're being recorded "for training purposes".

I'm not sure if this is just popular fiction, or for real, but I believe in the UK (1990's era) you couldn't record a conversation if no party was aware of the recording. If one or more parties were informed it was legal.

As for the web cam deal I've only plugged mine in, or opened the privacy shade when I've needed it. My wife's laptop has a built in with no cover. I noticed the other day that it was covered in blue tape, she just didn't like it staring at her, now I can see her fears may have been justified.

Well, it's all just a fad, and we'll grow out of it. Look at how we've stopped putting covers on immodest chair legs, no longer have streakers at cricket matches and don't have slaves any more.
