OK, that one got me... What the H&$LL is a Luddite. So I checked, "An individual who is against technological change. Luddite comes from Englishman Ned Lud, who rose up against his employer in the late 1700s. Subsequently, "Luddites" emerged in other companies to protest and even destroy new machinery that would put them out of a job. A neo-Luddite is a Luddite in the Internet age."

So I think, according to this, your use of the word would better be a neo-luddite (aka. of the Internet age).

Yeah, but as you can tell, Mike is an old-fashioned kinda guy, so he's using the old word. :-)

BTW, "luddite" is used differently today: many, like Mike, uses it to mean somebody who prefers older technology or just can't get used to new, rather than somebody who actively fights new technology.

I was going to spout off about that too, Luddites, we were taught, were machine breakers. It differs significantly from "late adopter" or "atechnic".

The Luddites are also a pop group from the 70's or 80's. I remember them and "New Model Army" were two bands that had names that showed in our history lessons.

As for vanishing public phones...

Here's one argument (YouTube) for email at least, in favor of paper mail.
