Hunter said

Hunter S. Thompson in September 2001:
"We are going to punish somebody for this attack, but just who or where will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say. Maybe Afghanistan, maybe Pakistan or Irag, or possibly all three at once. Who knows? Not even the Generals in what remains of the Pentagon or the New York papers calling for war seem to know who did it or where to look for them.

This is going to be a very expensive war, and Victory is not guaranteed--for anyone, and certainly not for a baffled little creep like George W. Bush. All he knows is that his father started the war a long time ago, and that he, the goofy child President, has been chosen by Fate and the global Oil industry to finish it off."

I don't know who Hunter is, but he obviously has a short historical memory. It was Sadam Husein who started the gulf war by invading Kuwait. George H.W. Bush went into Desert Shield and subsequently Desert Strom to oust Iraq from Kuwait. He did so and the war was over. Many U.S. hawks wanted him to finish off Husein, but he left a bruise Iraq in power as a counter-balance to keep Iran in check. George W. Bush had no obligation to finish the Gulf war. That was already finished.

I think Thompson was talking about how people *feel*, including Bush, not about facts or reasoning.

@anon: It's funny how you got all that wrong; including not knowing just who H.S.T. is.

"The Persian Gulf War, codenamed Operation Desert Storm commonly referred to as simply the Gulf War, was a war waged by a UN-authorized coalition force from 34 nations led by the United States, against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait."

The start of Desert Storm? Fear of Iraqi invasion of Saudi Arabi, not the invasion of Kuweit directly.

@Eolake: Thats also true, plus GREAT BLOG!!!
