24 megapixels go Consumer

Nikon's new "entry-level" camera D3200 has 24 megapixels! Man, that's nuts. Who, buying a $700 racecar-red camera needs 24 megapixels? Or the file sizes which come with them? And do those people have the humongous $1500 lenses you need to really exploit such a resolution?

I'm with you all the way here. That's more than the 5DIII! If it were me, I'd want 12 megapixels or so, seems a nice balance of resolution & file size.

With 24 megapixels, that means you could take a group portrait and then crop out a head shot for each individual to make 8x10 enlargements! ;-)

It's Moore's law in action. The price of a megapixel has dropped to a point where they can sell 24 MP at this price. And why not? If the user doesn't like the file size he can choose to record at 13.5 MP or 6 MP instead. Also it makes a great second body for a D800 owner.

It's a $700 camera. If you're not going to exploit the 24MP you could save a few hundred dollars. Especially if like me you're just going to be taking snapshots that will be printed 4x6.
