The Axis

Apropos prostitutes, how about this little scared-straight gem?

"Good time girls". Hadn't heard that term before, I like it.

"You can't beat the Axis if you get VD." Gotta love it. On the order of "duck and cover" as defence against the A-bomb.

Mommy? What's an "Axis"?

It's like an axe, Dear, only a slim one for ladies.

My mother always tells me to be away of all women 1metres away for this reason. When she was young and her parents got to know about AIDS that time, they warned her not to even look at guys afraid if AIDS might spread even through by simply looking or perhaps due to the fact that looking might cause attractions to those men.

I'll look to like, if looking liking move:
But no more deep will I endart mine eye
Than your consent gives strength to make it fly.

What does that has to do with what I said?

It comes from a dialogue between Juliet and her mother.

Juliet is to attend a party. Since she is coming of age she is being encouraged to find a suitor, one in particular has been lined up. The quote was her reply.

She is accepting that she will be cruising the talent, looking to see if there is a man who can please her. However she maintains that she will keep the chase as chaste as her parents wish, knowing that looking leads to lusting and/or love.

It is relevant in many ways. You were talking of how looking is frowned upon. It was too in Juliet's day until the age for marriage was met.

Juliet is following parental guidance in matters of love and sex. The was also a question/point raised in your post.

Of course, Shakespeare, when taken out of context is nowt but a bunch of lyrical words strung together, oft with little meaning.

Does that means we should n't look at beautiful women? Then what is Eolake fighting for?

It means that where/when we live guides our moral view point.

The creator(s) in their infinite talent and wisdom caused people to exist. Somewhere along the way modesty was learnt. Now modesty is being un-learnt. Person by person, county by county (yes, county), nation by nation.

If what you want does not hurt anyone, then it is acceptable behavior. Of course, if someone you care about is mortally offended by the idea of you seeing or seeking naked beauty, and it constrains your freedoms to not see nudity, then there is a conflict and no perfect solution.

You can't change the world in a day (well, you can, but it would mean doing something pretty severe, not even dropping the second A bomb changed the whole world). You can educate, but don't alienate.

The "fight" must go on. Natural beauty is there for all (unless we are talking about a modest beautiful person who wishes their privacy).

Okaaaay... So why beat the slim axe for ladies? Hunh, Mom? Hunh? Why?

Anurag,
I'm surprised your parents have such trivial worries. Don't they know a virgin woman can get pregnant just by looking into George Clooney's beautiful eyes at a cinema movie?
That's far worse than Aids, the Plague and Cholera put together!
(Last time a pure virgin looked into the eyes of a god and got pregnant, it launched a religion and led to the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition and Bush Jr's Iraq war. Talk about causing trouble!)

Shakespeare was nothing but a fancy-talking dirty old pervert anyway. All his pornograhic plays A.M.M.G.A.B.R.O.
Just look at his name: shake-spear. That's far naughtier than beating an axe.

Pascal [P-04referent] said...

Mom? What's the gentleman with the industrial lighter talking about? And what does that mean, "more Greek hoplites than you can shake a spear at"?

So, does that mean we should not look at the opposite sex?

Alex said...

Look on. Though no creepy leering.

Do not try to sneak into the swimming pool on ladies night for a gawp or a glance.

Where you see beauty, enjoy beauty.
