On Amazon.com, I've found it useful to read the reviews that give the lowest scores. If their criticisms are based on something more solid than personal taste, they can point out the product's weaknesses and provide useful guidance.

Three-star reviews can be useful, too: they're usually from people who wanted to like the product, and who say just what it was that disappointed them.

Yes. I find ratings useful, when they are accompanied by *reviews*.

An average of three, 3.5 stars means a boring movie if the ratings are concentrated in the middle, and an unusual one if they are polarized.
