China backs down over controversial censorship software

China backs down over controversial censorship software, article.
"Green Dam" censorship software, which was to be compulsory on all new PCs in China, is now optional after massive protests.
It includes porn picture filters based on color, blocking lots of skin colors. So for example a hard-core picture with black models might be allowed, but a close-up portrait of George Bush would be banned as obscene. (Not that everybody would disagree with that result, but one assumes it was not the intent.)

This stupid software again falls automatically under the common mistake people make, that "skin" (nudity) equals porn.
So, a Spencer Tunick photoshoot seen from far away (with no visible "details") would probably get a warning message sent to the morality police at the Ministry of Love, while peole having hardcore, fully explicit sex with only their pants 25 cm (ten inches) down would go by without being annoyed at all.
Yeah, right.
I think it's VERY fortunate, in this day where humans are still very primitive in their mentality, that artificial intelligence softwares remain incapable of reliably assessing the contents of an image. (Just like human censors in Lebaon, rather often!)
):-P

Reminds me of I forget who, saying that "intelligence is not specific to humans, so to make computers more like us, what we should try to achieve is artificial stupidity!"
