I was very surprised by how extremely quickly smoke move. It’s easier to photograph a racing car!
The rising of cigarette-smoke is actually so quick that conventional flash equipment is too slow, as is the photographer – only a few milliseconds pass between recognition of the subject and the taking of the shot, a length of time in which the smoke has already changed again.

Hard to believe, but it would explain why this apparently obvious and attractive subject has not been done to death long ago (like others, say, reflections and shadows).

Photographing smoke is not difficult, does not require a really fast camera, nor a really fast photographer. These I did seem to be very popular, particularly as prints.

Downside (well, aside from price and bulk): no Image Stabilization. (May be why it's discontinued.) Canon's 800mm is far more portable, also has great reach, and has excellent IS. And costs about 1/10th, too.

Olympus global photo contest

Olympus is kicking off a big photo contest, obviously for Olympus users.

Probably many thousands are going to compete, so it won't be the easiest one to win. But it's easy and free to enter, so why not?

As a technical aside, the second picture, girl with a ladder: It's taken indoors with a pocket camera... on tele-setting! (100mm-equivalent)... *and* it is cropped rather a lot. And yet the grain in the door is fully sharp. Amazing camera.

By the way, I used at least three different settings on the zoom for these. Even a 3- or 4-X zoom on a camera really boost its usefulness, in my view.

Bert and I talked about how skin is transparent in varying degrees to light of different wavelength, and he found this video, showing latent stuff like freckles showing up on an ultraviolet camera.

Members of the public are legally allowed to record police interactions. Intentional interference such as blocking or obstructing cameras or ordering the person to cease constitutes censorship and also violates the First Amendment.

I was not attracted to Bob's Burgers for the longest time, but then I saw a bit which showed me that not only was it funny, it also had actual stories.

One episode, The Belchies, ends with a song which not only is good, but is sung by Cindy Lauper (I love her, she's game), and not only that, but is *about* the story and the ending, written specifically to it.

I post two versions, the second has the animation, but very poor sound, the first one has only sound, but sounds good.
