Busyness serves as a kind of existential reassurance, a hedge against emptiness; obviously your life cannot possibly be silly or trivial or meaningless if you are so busy, completely booked, in demand every hour of the day.

Some people keep busy to avoid socialising. Reclusive types, or people with issues of self-confidence do the same. And finally, people trying to avoid contact with other people are often too polite to say they do not want to see certain people.
