Two pub pics and more

I tried a pub for lunch today where I haven't been in a while. They have new owners and they do food all day, which is great.
Also it turned out that the burger I got was really excellent, a nice surprise, I have been wanting more choice for lunch. Heck, even the corner sofa seat I got was the most comfortable I've sat in for a while. Good lunch time.
There was this great low January sunlight, so I took these pics. (Canon S90, "you don't need to know you got it with you".)

While walking and eating I listened to David Pogue's recent novel. I used an iPod Nano in a Lunatik Lynk wrist chain. It's a pretty geeky item one might think, but it looks nice, and it works well both as a watch and an iPod.

On the way home I walked past a watch shop. Most men's watches seemed to be around 5,000 pounds sterling ($8,000). And I guess that now everybody has the time on their "moby", we can no longer pretend that pricey watches are not, well, jewelry. I wonder how such a shop survives in a working class town.

It's probably a front for something.

That place looks like the large, impersonal, chain type places I'd have though you'd hate.

Mmm, I have no strong feelings about it. Sure, it's a big-chain-owned place, but it's a pleasant space, even unusually well-lit as you can see, and the staff are friendly and the food is good. Only downside is the wealth of big promotional signs.

I did have a favorite small mom-pop pub that I often went to for lunch, but sadly they went bust last year. (No caca it's hard times. I went and spoke with my frame-maker, and he talked at length about how he's struggling to extricate himself from a dying business as he's nearing retirement age.)

This was the only small place I'd found (excepting a nice italian restaurant) where the food was really good, so even if I wanted I can't afford to be picky.

I remember reading somewhere recently how many pubs close every day in Britain. I can't remember how many it was but it was a lot. You'd think that, since pubs are as much associated with England as double decker buses, Big Ben, and Beefeaters they'd want to protect them - at least some of the more historical ones. I don't know if the one you're talking about was that old or not.

You've got to move to London! I bet if you sold your place you could get at least 500 square feet with a bathroom down the hall.

Mmm, I'm still not really decided if I'm basically a city boy or not. I like the choice, but I'm not fond of the traffic noise and such.

The pub was quite old, I think more than 150 years. Used to be called the Golden Lion, was nick-named the Brass Cat by these northeners, and took that name officially many years ago.

It even had a house ghost! The staff met it, and I heard a little girl (like 10) who said she wouldn't come back, and the owner told me it was because she's met the ghost in the ladies'.

The owner was really down about how biz was going though, so I was not surprised when it finally closed.

I guess it's hard to find financial support for pubs, give that there's such a huge number of them, they're all over the place.
