These are wonderful. I especially like the 4th one, cuz I'm a sucker for fences and gates.

Me too. When I live in Edingburgh in 2000, I was working on a "gates of Edinburgh" series, because the city is shock full of these old iron gates. Some of them lead nowhere because the garden behind them is overgrown with trees and such, so you can't even open the gate!

Thanks, Russ! Coming from you, that's a great compliment! From a couple of days ago, when we had that 23-degree weather! Sure dipping down there, again, tonight! :-( Wishing I had a fish-eye, tonight! I was looking @ that moon, tonight, w/those stars and seeing the rim of evergreens all around; it would have been fun...if I knew how to crank something like that out! lol! :-D

I haven't been on your Flickr page for way too long, now. Your shots are very cool! I, particularly, love the waterfall/stream stuff. Yet another thing I want to learn. :-)

Not bad, not bad at all. :)

Oh ya, I just took a peek at Russ's photos, very nice. Eye for compositions.

Oh thanks, dood! Especially coming from an up and coming 'Rock Star,' I'll take that as a compliment, as well! ;-) (Read your blog, the other night. :-) You're funny! :-D

Yeah. Really nice! One wouldn't even need to go anywhere to enjoy a nice outdoor scene of the beach or forest! :-P (nice if it's too cold to go outside; or...if a person is bed-bound...like an elderly person.)

Thanks Eolake and TC[Girl] for the kind words. Speaking of cold weather, I plan on getting up at 5am tomorrow to catch the total eclipse of the moon. I'm sure I'll be clapping my hands and jumping up and down between exposures! ;-)

TC [Girl] said...

I just noticed re: that eclipse! Better you than me! :-P (I did my "time" doing these shots, the other day! Almost froze my fingers off! Several hours' worth of time out there.)

I would highly recommend: snow pants and...the mitts where the top pops off to expose the finger tips. I should have had some of those, the other day!

Stay warm! Looking forward to seeing the pictures! :-D

That's so funny, I just purchased the gloves you recommended a few days ago:

http://www.freehands.com/products/Stretch%2C-Mens.html

Worth every penny! :D

Eolake Stobblehouse said...

That looks great. Very reasonable price too.

Eolake Stobblehouse said...

... I've ordered a pair. About time my 20-year old gloves got replaced anyhow!
(Though I don't think I can throw them out, they are still in good shape, sometimes I have amazing luck with the longevity of the things I buy.)

Dear TC,

They are all excellent. I like the ducks best of all. The bursts of color surrounded by all that grey!

While it wouldn't work like a fisheye lens for your Moon shot you should really checkout Microsoft's ICE program (probably only for Windows though). It will stitch together hundreds of overlapping photos presented to it in any order to make a huge composite picture. Not just left to right stitching like most panorama stitching programs but two dimensional stitching: left-right and up-down.

On second thought, maybe the stars would provide enough reference points to stitch your proposed Moon and stars images.

It also seems to do some work matching the exposure across all the photos. You can chose between cylindrical, perspective and spherical projections.

An utterly amazing tour-de-force of programming

I'll stop being a wimp. I thought it was cold when I took some night photos of the Bay Bridge. It was in the 50's and I needed to put a coat on.

Glad it warmed up again, back in the 60's now.

Eolake Stobblehouse said...

I was a bit surprised when I was just out at midnight: ice on some water. But unlike most of this week, the wind had died down, so it didn't feel too durn cold. (We've had so much storm this week.)

Quit bragging! lol! You don't know how much I MISS the California..."winters!" What I wouldn't give for a 60, anytime soon! :-( (I guess I'll have to find my way around to your blog, now, to see those bridge pics, hey, Alex? Homesick for the Bay, as well! Had I stayed back there, I'd probably have been sailing on the Bay, every weekend! Yet another thing I miss!) :-(

Russ: Honestly, I have NEVER seen those kinds of gloves, before! They look AWESOME! I was thinking of the little knitted kind (OK. Admittedly, probably not your color, but...you get the idea!) but, dang...I'm impressed! The ones you found look AMAZING! And...of COURSE you don't need to expose more than the thumb and one finger! Great idea!

So...you have to tell: did you have any luck seeing the eclipse? Reports had it still foggy and unable to see the moon. Did you experience same?

Funny captcha (second time, tonight): "handsi"

Probably 'cuz you buy quality and don't use them too often? :-) They can be nice for a back-up or...if you don't really want them "hanging around," any longer, I wonder if you guys have "second-hand" stores, where people give things to that they don't want/need. :-)

I HATE when it's windy! Makes winter even more unbearable, for me! YUCK! :-(

TC [Girl] said...

Wha! I used to live right by the Dumbarton! (Newark) I miss that area a LOT! Nice shots! LOVE the airplane trails and the color on the bottom one (where it looks like a couple of planets are out, right behind there, isn't it?)!

Would you go get me a couple of Chilean Sea Bass steaks, at the Asian Market, Dude? We live about the same distance from the coast, here, but it's like pulling teeth to get any decent fish around here! No Asian markets! :-(

OK. Just looked @ the Embarcadero! OK, Dude...you are making me HOMESICK for a festive place to be! LOVE your night shots! Are you using the D80 to do these?

Thanks for sharing, Alex; and...what the heck are you still doing up?! Don't you have your day job, anymore?! ;-) (you're as bad as me; I, practically, stay up, around the clock, these days! I'll sleep when I'm dead! lol! :-/

TC [Girl] said...

Alex: did you shoot these from the Alameda Marina? (Looks too far north to be Treasure Island...methinks. Almost been 8 years, now, though, so...memory not quite as sharp! lol!)

FUNNY dang captcha's, lately: "pinedram" :-D

I lost one day job, when Cisco closed down Flip, but have a new one making TV broadcast equipment.

I curse the pacific for not having cod and haddock, its all snapper and orange roughy now.

Still on the d80, but have a nice Tokina prime with a wide aperture. I also got a new tripod, so I have to go night shooting when I can.

Good for you! Hang in there!

"I curse the pacific for not having cod and haddock, its all snapper and orange roughy now."

Cod would be nice! :-P

"Still on the d80, but have a nice Tokina prime with a wide aperture."

This lens fits Nikon? I've never heard of 'em, before.

"I also got a new tripod, so I have to go night shooting when I can."

Should be good fun! Wish I was down there! I haven't figured out (nor had time!) how to do any of that, yet! Even bought myself a [shoot! It's too late! I can't even remember what it's called! "$200 category in 'Photography:' "Implement used to do timed exposures."] and haven't been able to figure out how to use it, yet! :-( You sure look like you've got it figured out! :-D

Opened up the iris, choose a fast film emulation, and the camera can do shutter speeds down to 30 s, good job too, I left my cable release at home. Shot raw + jpeg and did a little lightroom on some.

"I wonder if you guys have "second-hand" stores, where people give things to that they don't want/need."

Sure, they call them "charity shops" here, like the Heart Foundation's one for example. There are a couple in town. I've sometimes given heaps of books and films to them.

Eolake Stobblehouse said...

Nice bridge pics, Alex.

Bridges are often good targets for photography.

Lunar Eclipse shots for anyone interested. LOVE #'s 2 & 3! :-P GORGEOUS!

I thought you had written same, before. :-)

TC [Girl] said...

@ Anon: Thank you very much...for your compliment and recommendation. You are the second person to recommend ICE to me; must mean I need to get with it! ;-)

Have you clicked on the duck picture and then zoomed in, w/the little magnifying lens, to see the beautiful, rich colors of those tiny feathers of their wings, on their sides? The left duck's wing's color is more blue and the right guy has a combination of blue and purple; and...also the left one has the white ring around his neck whereas the right one does not. I just thought that was kind of interesting/fun to note, myself. :-D

Is this yiny sensordust i see in the sky on the fog picture?

TC [Girl] said...

On the first one, Anon? Could be. That or...some spots on the UV filter that I always have on.

I was just noticing a line across the bottom one, as well. Hadn't noticed that, before, neither. I think that probably ends up being the power line that Eo helped me get rid of. I had completely forgotten about those power lines! lol! :-)

Yes, the reports were correct. Downtown was completely socked in. I had to travel 1/2 an hour East on the Columbia River in order to find a break in the clouds/fog. By the time I managed to get one decent shot of the moon, it was completely enveloped for the rest of the morning:

BTW, even though the temp was right at freezing the gloves worked as expected, except for the top of my index finger and thumb, which were numb until I could crank the heater up in the car!

Nice shot, Russ! Did you see the link, just a few comments back, on this posting? There's, oddly, one from Portland; hence, why I was even more curious to find out how successful you were!

Did ya use a filter on those other river shots? One of my favorite areas; well...I like Crown Point a LOT! I could live up there! :-D

No kidding! So...NOT worth their money, then?! I'd return 'em if I were you! :-/ Thanks for your feedback; really appreciate it! :-D

Eolake Stobblehouse said...

Well, you can hardly expect the gloves to keep fingers warm which are exposed. ?

TC [Girl] said...

No but...perhaps being able to pop the little tops on, every once in awhile, would have prevented the frozen fingers, no? Otherwise, what the heck is the purpose of having even bothered to include them?! :-(

Russ said...

Yeah, you really can't twirl the knobs and command wheels on your camera unless you have the little tops off. No sense in putting them back on until the photo session is finished... and by then they're numb. As long as they don't turn black and fall off, it's all good! ;-)

TC [Girl] said...

Well...that's the very thing that prevents me from even wanting to step outside the door for MANY months of the year; namely, getting COLD! Don't laugh at me (I'm trying to solve this dilemma in my mind! lol!): have either of the 2 of you ever seen these? (I know; they look like little 'Minnie Me' rubbers! lol!) I was just wondering, 'cuz I HATE wearing rubber gloves, but...get warm in them very quickly...if it could work to wear some of those, on the thumb and index, hopefully, to keep some of the heat in; and make it much easier to stay dry and have some traction, to help w/all the wheels and such. Hmmm...

We used these finger cotts in the photo lab for years, as it makes it easy to handle film, but they will not no anything for cold and very little for wind.

I was always worried about visitors through the place thinking we were staffed by a bunch of hypersexed mini people, as these things were in bins all over the place!

OK. Thanks, Ian. Darn! I wondered about that! :-(

ROFLMAO! FUNNY! Yes...I know what you mean! The first time I saw these was while I was in dentistry, in the Military. If I remember, correctly, they were at our Reserve Unit's weekend dentistry office. As a JOKE, I wanted to hand them out to my male peers...to "promote healthy sexual activities!" :-D We had just learned about AIDS and such. Of course, I DIDN'T BUT...I was very tempted! I know; me and my SICK sense of humor! One of us would have been LAUGHING, HYSTERICALLY, anyway! :-D

Thanks for your feedback, though. I appreciate that.

Russ: LOVE that waterfall shot you did, on your excursion, the other day! BEAUTIFUL!

Maybe wear those thin, cheap cotton gloves, under those gloves? Should be easy to find on eBay.

TC [Girl] said...

Yeah. That might work. Thanks. Was just trying to look around for that Fuji X10 (for Alex) and called a Costco. They have an X20. Seems worlds different; yeah? I wonder what's the diff. Body looks different. Just trying to find out how old. And...price is certainly a lot different: $139.99.

So...I'll do my best to see if I, as an AMATEUR Amateur Photographer, got what you just said, 'cuz I've been trying to figure out HOW to shoot night shots for YEARS but haven't made the time to learn: "Opened up the iris" do you do that by setting it to manual and then holding down the shutter release, physically, yes? If so, not sure how long I would need to hold; seconds? minutes? :-/

"choose a fast film emulation" set the ISO high? Not sure what range. As you have read, recently, we've talked about ranges as extreme as 1600 all the fricken way up to...12,800!! lol!

Do you "turn up the lights" (contrast? I don't know! And, yes...I know I need to take a class but life just keeps on getting in the way of such a luxury! I bought this and, for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how the heck to use it and it didn't come w/instructions! Such a pain, when I don't have anyone around to learn this stuff from! Just frustrating and still sitting around twittling my thumbs trying to figure out HOW to do what YOU already know how to do!) w/'Lightroom?' I, recently, got PS Elements and haven't spent any time w/it. I'm not terribly fond of manipulating my pictures. Call me ULTRA lazy! :-P
