Who Stan Kubrick is interested in

HILARIOUS picture! He probably snuck that picture in! Not sure if Nicholson would have been able to handle knowing that that picture wasn't entirely about him! ;-)

Dudeski left us w/an amazing body of work! Giving me some ideas of films of his to watch that I haven't seen, yet; and a book to read, as well! :-D

I'm not sure, I always thought SK was sort of a formalist... very skilled indeed, but made movies cerebrally instead of from the heart. They are all clearly good films, but none of them engaged me for realsies.

You didn't get "engaged" in 'The Shining?! :-0 (holy shit!) 'Eyes Wide Shut' was just...weird, in my mind! I remember that whole "hush hush" that surrounded the making of that film. Even Cruise and Kidman had this creepy "funk" that seemed to hang over them, whilst they did that film! His last film, too!

Actually I agree on both points.

And the Shining I liked a lot better than the book, which I found pretty much unreadable.

Eyes Wide Shut I suspect was *about* disengagement, so successfully that the film was fully disengaging. He even managed to make a stack of the world's prettiest women, stark nude, look cold and distant.

Funny...I would neither have watched the movie (ended up watching it 3 times, in a row; nothing else on cable, at the time, as a kid living @ a resort! The silly things teenagers subject themselves to whilst "bored!"), let alone tried to read such a book! Not my cuppa tea! :-/ Coming to think of it, that might have been the last "scary" flick that I ever subjected myself to!

Yeah, Kubrick is a hero of mine, too. I don't think I will ever fully recover from watching 2001. It rewired my brain, and the wiring is still put.

Shining was just delicious! :-) His movies are larger than life.

LOL! Good point! Yes..."Mission Accomplished!" ;-)

"He even managed to make a stack of the world's prettiest women, stark nude, look cold and distant.""

Yes...I remember that. It "felt" very "cold" and "clinical/sterile"...not that I'm into watching GoG stuff er nuttin.' I watched it 'cuz there was so much mystery around it and...although I have never been a fan of Tom Cruise, I always have been of Nicole Kidman and...I rather enjoyed seeing both of them in 'Far and Away;' Tom and Nicole's real-life "beginnings." (What can I say; I'm a "HopeFUL Romantic!" :-D And...I didn't remember knowing that Ron Howard produced F&A! Interesting! But...he had also done a ton of work, before F&A! Good man, that one! :-)

Oh yeah, forgot for a mo that 2001 was his too. "The proverbial 'good science fiction movie'", as they wanted it to be, and many agree it became so. Certainly something entirely different than what had come before, a serious and ambitious SF movie.

I read the book (Clarke) many years before I saw the film. Unusually, they were made in tandem.

Ron Howard: "Arrested Development". Say no mo'.

Lesser-known Kubrick, but possibly his greatest film: Paths of Glory, from 1957.

It's a movie that keeps changing shape. It's a war movie! No, it's a courtroom drama! No, it's...

I felt fidgety at times when I first saw the movie, but as it neared the end, I thought, "Wow! This is a great movie!" But when the final scene began, I thought, "Oh, no, he ruined it!"

But he didn't ruin it. The ending bowled me over.
