Rowling at Harvard

J.K. Rowling speaks at Harvard (it's some kind of secondary school, I believe*). Video and transcript.

Online videos are improving. I like the Vimeo interface, where the controls and data are hidden until you mouse-over. Very clean and nice.

*That's a joke.

If you get famous enough, you're invited to places you couldn't afford to attend earlier on. :)

Yes, this is a funny dynamic, isn't it? Some of the people the big Us suck up to are people who never set foot there before, or who never used their education to make their fortune.

I've always admired some of the insights of Mark Twain. He once said about education, "I've never let my schooling interfere with my education."

They had Seth MacFarlane speak at Harvard. I think that's funny. And if you like Family Guy you'd like his talk which is on YouTube.

Of course there are a lot of people in the world who have been very successful and become very rich without having much of an education - like Quentin Tarantino, who not only didn't go to university but didn't even finish high school. I guess if you're going to do that you'd better have a lot of talent and/or brains (luck doesn't hurt either).

A little bit, yes.

That helps, but enthusiasm and persistence may be central. If you dislike working, you better get an education. :-)

I don't know, there are a lot of bad writers, painters, actors, musicians, etc. out there who are very persistent. And a lot of bad singers who won't admit they're bad (see American Idol). Without talent at least all the persistence in the world ain't gonna do ya a helluva lotta good. Huh!
