It reminds me of another behemoth, the B-52. More precisely, a comment from a pilot: "The three main things about flying a B-52 are planning, planning and more planning. Turning around is not an option."
The wikipedia entry gave a map reference to find one of these. Looking at the google maps image today there you can see satellite time lapse photography. The photos of the mine were taken at different times, and you can see how the mine has grown.

Ah yes.
I was small when they were on. And the one thing I can remember is a huge war tank thingy going up a mountain track, and then falling down.
