A weird twist in copyright

Apparently now big corporations are stealing from individuals, instead of vice versa. It's a weird life.

Talking about weird, how about the Allison Stokke story? I an not sure what to think about that. On the one hand, I can understand that too much attention is too much, especially from creeps who overdo it or act as a-holes. On the other hand Allison is exceedingly attractive, and those shorts are really very small. It should not really be a big surprise that men like to put her picture on their desktop.

And about that, the former article, referring the latter issue, says: "It's all doubly muddled online, where images can be thoughtlessly taken with one mouse click, such as when thousands of boys made screensavers out of high school track star Allison Stokke's photo and never once asked, 'Legal?'"...
This is a pretty dumb comment. Personal use is legal. This issue is not germane to that discussion. I would expect better journalism from Washington Post.

Here's another remarkable comment: "'What's noteworthy in each of these cases', Lessig says, 'is that bloggers, a community typically associated with piracy, are rallying in support of copyright.'"
Bloggers are a community? With common personality traits? That's news to me. If "bloggers" are a group, it may well be the most diverse group I've ever heard of. And about the least coherent.

I'm reminded: 25 years ago, I was contacted by Danish newspaper Extrabladet, they wanted to use this photo of my mom (which had placed highly in national contests and exhibitions) to illustrate an article about the elderly. I refused, because even though back then I could certainly have used any money they would pay, Extrabladet is a low-brow, unprincipled, and mean-spirited publication, and I wanted nothing to do with them.

She is beautiful. Peeped on Google images, and being a genuine sucker for a smile, I instantly fell in love. Wow.

And still, 'tis a sad situation. I certainly can understand how being suddenly "caught in the web", so to speak, turned into a real nightmare for her.

But I am afraid that there is little to be done about this kind of situation, other than keeping private photos private. Posting in any public area of the web is just like opening a thousand doors, there's no way back.

It is true that, in Allison's case, a sports photographer started the whole thing, and not some peer's indiscretion. But unless she planned to retire from sports soon, this was due to happen sooner or later, as she will get only more and more exposure as she progresses. Better she gets used to it, unless she start competing in an invisible suit (no suit at all would be much nicer to us, though).

But all that is besides the copyright issue. Seeing large outfits exposed for their blatant disrespect of amateur photographers certainly has a nice smell to it, but does anyone think that things are going to change?

Any suit will tell you off the record that picking photographs off the web is OK, as long as you don't get caught. And, just in case you do, make sure that it is from an amateur, they can't bite hard.

But have I got news for those same outfits the day they come whining at my door because I watch TV without the commercials...

While checking the spelling of "blatant" (goofed enough lately), I ran into a reference to "The most blatent reference to anal sex in a cartoon, ever". Couldn't help myself, just had to take a peek, and I must say that the title is justified!

Whats wrong for a girl as beautiful as her to be phototgraphed with her shorts on. Eolake, you yourself used to argue on why is nudity not been made famous and now, you yourself turning down to it. Isn't that hypocritic. The exposure of her skin is not disrespectful of her. We should instead be happy of allowing pics. of beautiful women to be made available tom as many parts of the world. This is what the founder of the movement www.superbeauty.org and www.bodyinmind.com tryin' to do. makin'it famous. THe more popular an intelligent beautiful women becomes she must feel proud of it. What she must worry about is that she must do her best to stay at the top. At least that pic. is not as bad as pics. of ladies on hardcore porn. Nudity is not equal to sex! Something which you used to promote. I think that you also turned back to be a prude like others.

Anurag, I did not say that I didn't like the shorts! Au contraire. Anybody looking like that can dress like that 24/7 in my opinion. I just said that she should expect a lot of interest. Just look at Anna Koshnako...va...kocha..koshni... whatever, that tennis player. It happens.

What do you mean by expect by a lot of interest? Can you please elaborate on that please.

A lot of men (and women) like to look at her.

Why do it? Because they can.

It's not about right. It's not about law.
It's just about having the power of corporate money, and abusing it.

Reminds me of what I said about videogame piracy in Lebanon. Whole countries, continents even, get plundered by the powerful, well above any Earth law or justice. It's a weird life, but essentially, it's a pragmatic world. Principles are the exception to a rule named Anarchy.

Good thing they have courts in the USA. A country where the most insignificant citizen can sue the most poerful one, ya gotta love at least that in "the Great Satan".

I googled the young lady. I admit it, I'm horny ...

Anyway:

She's too beautiful ... that style of look makes me feel like my life has been lost. It's a sad bittersweet kind of "gosh why is my karma so bad" feeling.

This image makes it look like she doesn't mind being photographed, and like she knows how to pose (turns her hips sideways like the movie stars do):

This image makes it look like she's comfortable being in the spotlight:

I'm not so sure the whole "I hate the attention" thing isn't an attention-seeking ploy ... hmm ...

I doubt it. I just think it came too suddenly and she got overwhelmed.

She certainly knows how to dress to accent her figure, though. Woa mama.
