There are quite a few iPhones for sale on eBay. Starting bid $800.

Here it comes: iPhone without AT&T. And by none other than DVD Jon.

I was wondering how many days it might take. Now we know: 5.

It is unbelievable that they won't even let people buy it and use it as an iPod without a fucking phone contract.

This is bizarre: on Jon's blog, I get the iPhone post no matter which link I click on. In both Safari and Firefox.

They must have moved his 'site' (that single page for now) to a temporary server to better cope with the traffic he will be getting during the next couple of days.

There is also now a Wiki for iPhone hackers. 8-)

I wonder if Apple really thought this one through. Five days and the device is cracked and eBay-preneurs have a healthy business shipping them to Europe and elsewhere.

Couldn't they have sold the thing in Apple Store just like their other puters, and everyone would have been free to stick in whatever SIM card they please (or, if desired, use the thing as is, as a high end iPod)?

What happens now is that they will soon have to do this anyway, which will anger those who bought in on the two year AT&T contract thinking it's the only way to get the iPhone experience.

..."without a fucking phone contract."

Actually, I expect this device to greatly boost phone sex. (Also known as "fucking phone". :-)
