One of the most famous prayers in the world is also one of the wisest:
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
... if I were to add one thing to that, it might be: and wisdom to see where my efforts are best spent.

Hi Eolake -
For what interest it may (or may not) be worth, here is the less known but more complete version:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it.
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will. That I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with Him forever in the next.
Amen.
I'm a big fan of your online contributions. Keep up the good work!
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change..."(partly quoted). How close is Islamic Thought to Chriastianity, yet, how inimically do the cartoonists behave in the West! Almost exactly in similar words is the Hadith(sayings of The Holy Prophet). All reputed Universaties in Europe have Scholars-on-Islam and they may confirm that such words are the Hadith words! from QaziMansurpuri Pakistan
