Lay Lady Lay

Repost: three awesome versions of Lay Lady Lay.

I am "rediscovering" much of my old music, thanks to my new AudioEngine D3.
Unbelievable that such a tiny thing can make such a difference. I didn't think my desktop Harman Kardon SoundSticks could sound any better. (Unlike the D3, those are unbelievably cheap, best buy I ever made.)

New tech for audio is crazy these days, isn't it? I just got this DAC, which allows playing SACD files. I love it. http://www.musicdirect.com/p-161157-ifi-nano-idsd-dac.aspx

I'm ignorant of the tech behind.
What is SACD?

Super Audio CD, a better form of CD, which was expected to be the new standard but wasn't that successful. They still make a reasonable number of discs.

So many more of these DAC since I got my system about 3 years ago.

Aha.

If 99.5% can't hear the difference, then a new format don't have much chance of surviving. (Not sure where I stand, I'm probably medium-sensitive.)

There also was a "Audio-DVD" format for a while, no?

Considering that Amazon sell MP3's at only a moderate bitrate it seems that lots of people don't care about audio quality. At least Apple uses AAC which is better but still using the same bitrate. For a lot of rock music it probably doesn't matter, but there is definitely a difference with classical when compared to Apple Lossless.

There's no doubt that the higher bitrate files sound better. How much better? It depends on your system. I'm having trouble swallowing that an 8 minute track can be over half a gig. But, it sounds as good as analog just without the mess of vinyl.
