It seems she had lots of substance before she added all the flash.
Or to put it another way, all the sizzle now is almost hiding the steak.
Or a third way, maybe her hat was too small, but now it's so big it's hiding the cattle which was actually there. (Texan expression: "all hat and no cattle".)

What a shame, elegance in performance to GaGa.
I dont think it's a shame at all. She's found out what sells and is using it (and using it better than most). Had she continued as she was in that video chances are that you, or any of her Gaga fans, wouldn't have heard of her.

I can't really call that success though. I'd rather have a few honest fans than have to compromise myself or my music for fame. I mean, I can think of a bunch of bands that most people haven't heard of that have still made a major impact in people's lives.
"Big hat, no cattle," is a description for somebody who is basically bluffing their way through life. "You dress like a rancher, but you don't have a ranch," that sort of thing.
Favela Chic is where Gaga is at. I can't say I like it, but I believe I understand it.
