Photographer Has Blower Confiscated by TSA Because it ‘Could Fly Like a Missile’, article.
(It's a dust blower, fully made of rubber/plastic.)
In the words of Steve Jobs: "it kind of makes you ashamed to be human".
And it's not even the first time.

ROFLMAO! OMG!! RIDIC!! :-P
So it's OK to have gunpowder provided it isn't in a form that looks like a bomb?
The stupid thing about the Americans anti-terror strategies is that they are all attempting to prevent the past events, as well as being annoying. Of course what the terrorists will try in the future will be much different and probably totally unexpected. The amount of attention they pay to non-USA citizens will probably mean that it will be performed by a US citizen.
It seems that photographers are now guilty of something simply by having photographic equipment.
In 1987 while visiting the then Soviet Union, I walked around with my Nikon on my shoulder and was never questioned.
Something to think about. . .
That may not have been the real reason. The guy might've just been a dick - like most photographers or, in your case, wannabe photographers.
Let's not be too hard on the TSA, they occasionally confiscate guns like this one. I had no idea that sock monkeys were on the list of known terrorists!
