Nokia Lumia 1520 sample photos

Nokia Lumia 1520's phone-camera, man, that is one friggin' good camera. With this, image-quality-wise, there is practically NO compromise from a good compact camera to this one. Good colors, good contrast range, decent low-light performance, and a very sharp lens indeed.
(Of course there are other compromises, but not much. It has no zoom, and the autofocus is not as fast as the best compact cameras. And a big-sensor compact like Sony RX100 will do better in very low light.)

Note, I still use my iPhone 5S as my phone and main mini-tablet. It's only the screen size and the camera of the Lumia 1520 which beats the iPhone, the user experience is otherwise markedly inferior, in my opinion. (And the camera in the iPhone is probably next-best.)

Writing is telepathy

"All the arts depend upon telepathy to some degree, but I believe that writing is the purest distillation. An important element of writing is transference. Your job isn't to write words on the page, but rather to transfer the ideas inside your head into the heads of your readers."

Eolake, in green or black?

I made the name Eolake up as my nom de plume in 1988, and I've been half-dreading others using it since. Nothing has come off it though until now, 2014, when I find out there's a nice Italian boot called Eolake and a "nefarious" vampire called Eolake! in a new book called Pale Moonlight. I think the boot is nicer.     :-)

Her pictures were mixed up with those of Nicole Bonner, below. For a moment there I thought "Ooooh no, what happened!!

New interview about photography

The site DearSusan (the title refers to Susan Sontag, who wrote a classic book about photography) has interviewed me about photography.

[Pascal] What’s your point of view on gear ? Does it matter to you or are you not interested ?
[Eolake] I love gear.
Many artists of any medium have often been very interested in tools and how they get, and use, the best, to best express themselves.
On the other hand, one can also buy a simple, but good camera, and only work with that for years with everything set to automatic, and possibly do excellent work. (Though it greatly helps to know well the limitations of that particular camera, and the limitations of automation!)

12 Quiet Rituals of Enormously Successful Humans

"12 Quiet Rituals of Enormously Successful Humans", article.

This is some of the best advice I have ever seen collected in one article.

There is an important hole in the ereader market

Here is an article on my e-reader blog containing a petition to Amazon for making a compact e-reader.

This, to me, this is about right sized, 5.5-6 inch screen and thin bezel.  There is a hole in the market between normal phones, which have too-small screens, and e-readers, almost all of which are too large to hold comfortably for long with one hand.

This is a Nokia Lumia 1520. I got it for the screen size, but to my delightful surprise the camera is at least as good as the famous Lumia 1020!
