Stony Kill Falls

Photos by my friends Jeff and Laurie, taken by Stony Kill Falls in New York, yesterday. (In New York state "kill" often means river/stream, especially in place names.)

I think these are great, I especially like the blue one for wallpaper.

Funny thing: my instincts, from all my early training as photographer, is to adjust the contrast of the angel photo, to get out the shadow detail (as below). But when I do it, it actually seems wrong, the composition falls apart and it becomes messy.
It's amazing how hard it is to learn to not take technique too seriously, that all the rules are only in the service of the picture, and not one of them is true always.

The Hudson River Valley and surrounding area (Stony Kill is not far from the river) helped inspire a whole school of art. Upstate New York State is one of the most beautiful regions I know for a photographer/landscape artist, even to this day.

Kool. (What's that school of art?)

I did know that the Northern east coast parts of the US has some very picturesque parts. Famous fall colors and such.

oh yes, Bruce, you said it.

We are only about an hour and a half north of NYC, and yet what stunning beauty and --- I won't say wilderness, but wildness.

I recently finished reading a book "The Island at the Center of the World" that makes reference to this. It seems that the Dutch who, with Henry Hudson's help, inhabited Manhatten Island and had a VERY strong influence on the current social values of America. The book stated the the work Kill in Dutch translates to river.

Oh, yes and being a resident of the Hudson River Valley, I agree with the statement on it's great beauty.

The School of Art?

Probably overly "Romantic" style for current tastes, but the river valley and surrounding areas is where the inspiration came from.

I live on the backside of the Shawangunk Ridge. Out my back door so to speak are cliffs, fir trees, sky lakes, hawk habitats, bear, whitetail deer, fox. Because of the warm fall, the bears are still out -- one was in our garbage the other morning.

Also, we pass often over the Walkway Over the Hudson, the new park/bridge going into the city of Poughkeepsie. There is something so beautiful about this river, you feel it when you're near it or walking over it. My friend rows on it with her crew team, I'm sorely tempted to join them.

p.s. the above waterfall is directly through the forest behind our house. When we bought the house (small cabin like) the realtor said it had been on the market a long time because "the location is bad."
