Movie quotes

Who has favorite movie qoutes?

Pascal offered up, from Batman:
"Have you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight?"

Two of mine are both from the android Roy in Bladerunner:

"If only you could see what I've seen with your eyes"

"All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain."

That film has to be one of the most lyrical ever made, both linguistically and visually. A triumph.

UPDATE:
"A year ago exactly on this same night we were assembled here in this very room, I your pastor, and you my beloved flock. With hopefulness in my heart I told you then that with Lucifer's aid we might look forward to a more succulent occasion. Cast back your minds. There we were, gathered together, gloomy and despondent, around a single meager woodcutter."
- The Fearless Vampire Killers: (Roman Polanski, 1967) Ferdy Mayne (as Count von Krolock)

..."The Fearless Vampire Killers" is another favorite of mine. Wonderful, strange film, very abstract, but everything in it works together like clockwork. Ferdy Mayne, who seems to have worked only very little in movies, is magnificent as the Count, his Transilvanian accent is the best ever. Don't miss this film.

"I'm trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it." Morpheus from 'The Matrix'

My favorite movie quote would have to be the American Beauty quote you posted a while back ago. Since that's been done already, I'll post a couple of Crow quotes I really like. Not exactly in keeping with the intellectual nature of this blog, but you can't deny their badassedness.

"Cop: Don't move!
Eric: I thought the police were supposed to say freeze.
Cop: Well, I say don't move. You move and you're dead.
Eric: And I say I'm dead, and I move."

"He was already dead. He died the moment he touched her. They're all dead. They just don't know it yet." - Eric

I second Eolake's opinion about the lyricalness of Blade Runner.

Roy's monologue is my favourite, too. I know it by heart and have often recited it in the most inappropriate moments:

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shore of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears...in rain. Time to die."

I also like this quote by Sebastian: "They're my friends. I make them."

" Rudy, you go get them........the bad guys." Tom (Nick Nolte)
"I don't know who they are anymore. I think.....I'm one of them." (Peter Strauss)
denouement scene in Rich Man Poor Man. (1976) television mini-series.

Still makes me weep when I see this moving scene. Man, what a great series! It launched the careers of Nolte and Strauss! Awesome.

I love that one too Pascal and have quoted it before! Once on a date lol. The lady freaked out. (No kidding) She said, "Are you saying you are evil?"
I had to explain to her the line in the movie lol.
I told her I was being naughty. She then understood (whew!) Needless to say we "connected." Uh huh Uh huh, that's the way I like it! (KC and the Sunshine band!)

" It's Showtime!" Apollo Creed bellows out in Rocky.

We should all make friends as easily as Sebastian.

I only faintly remember Rich Man Poor Man from when I was a kid. I'll rent it.

Willy Wonka:"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men."

Eolake Stobblehouse said...

Good one, even though I found the film pretty creepy.

The original with Billy Wilder? I cant believe you're refering to that? That's the one Im quoting. As for the remake by Tim Burton.... I dislike it quite alot. Tim Burton should stay away from anything Ive ever previously enjoyed as a child. Although he might be able to pull of a Wizard of Oz remake if he doesnt over do it.

Eolake Stobblehouse said...

Yes, the original. I know many see it as a great bastion of... I don't know, imagination and... help me out here. But I don't see it. I never quite understood what it is about, and I don't like any of the characters, they are nasty.

Right. But the book is THH most fun book I've ever read to kindergartners and first graders. The kids LOVE hearing it read. They love to hear Grandpa Joe say of Violet Beauregard (who tells her dad she needs an Oompah Loompah for a pet), "What she needs is a good kick in the PANTS."

Didn't like the re-make of the old movie. It had a meanness to it. The book is, like all Roald Dahl, deliciously irreverent but not mean. His books had a sweetness to them actually.

I'll then add the following cinematic gems:
"You can't fight in here! This is the war-room!!!"
Peter Sellers, in Dr Strangelove.
"I only came here to do but two things: Kick ass and chew bubblegum. Looks like we're all out of bubblegum"
Roddy Piper, in They Live

Hey, Skinny Puppy has a song with great samplings from "2001". I'll see if I can find it.

Do androids dream of electric sheep?

This was the title of the novel that was adapted as the movie Blade Runner. I think it was written by Asimov.
No surprise it was a great film!
And with young Harrison Ford, as a bonus.

Speaking of which, one of my fave movie quotes was when Ford said nothing. Yup. In Raiders of the Lost Ark, in the scene where Indiana Jones is challenged by that enraged sword-wielder in the market, and just shoots him with his pistol from safe distance!

There's a funny anecdote about that scene. Originally, there was supposed to be a very epic fight with that guy. But Harrison Ford had an... intestinal embarrassment that day, probably from traveling to a hot country, and he suddenly needed to end the shot urgently (you know what I mean!). So he improvised, and pulled his blank-loaded revolver.
The shot was so cool they kept it. :-)

That'll teach you to play Johnny Bravo! :-)

The original Willie Wonka movie was with Gene Wilder. And DEICIOUSLY silly. I still have those Oompa-Loompa songs in my head.
Maybe I should have it examined? :-)

I liked the Tim Burton version, but I don't know if it's fitted for little children. Then again, children today aren't the same as what I was at their age. Times change.
My little cousin once told my mother, about a violent movie on TV : "Don't worry, it's just make-believe!" :-)

And let me get back to you after I think over my cinematography for some quotes. I'm sure I've heard some cool ones in my life. ;-)

"Do androids dream of electric sheep" was by Philip K. Dick.
Seminal book, but a bit heavy, and very, very different from the movie. Barely related at all.

I once saw a five-year old boy playing tiger, snarling at passer-by. And then he would reassure them: "It's just me, Benjamin!"

Oooh, I could play this game for hours and hours...

John Huston as Noah Cross, in Chinatown: "You see, Mr. Gitts, most people never have to face the fact that at the right place, the right time, they're capable of... anything!"

From Little Big Man: "Sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't."

From North by Northwest:
Cary Grant: ROT -- that's my trademark.
Eva Marie Saint: Roger O. Thornhill... what's the O stand for?
Cary Grant: Nothing.

From Citizen Kane: "Well, you're pretty young, Mr. . . . Mr. Thompson. A fella'd remember a lot of things you wouldn't think he'd remember. You take me. One day back in 1896 I was crossing over to Jersey on the ferry. And as we pulled out, there was another ferry pulling in. And on it there was a girl waiting to get off. A white dress she had on, and she was carrying a white parasol. I only saw her for one second. She didn't see me at all. But I'll bet a month hasn't gone by since that I haven't thought of that girl."

Columbo: "What did you pay for those shoes?"

"Warriors........come out to play-ahhhhhhhhhhhh...." David Patrick Kelly.

"I'm gonna shove that ballbat up your ass and turn you into a popcycle!" James Remar (Warriors)

GREAT CULT CLASSIC!

Eolake,
When you say "nasty" do you mean ugly looking or their attitudes?

I remember that Terry! Great line wasn't it? I need to watch that movie again. It's amazing how it's popularity has remained so bright even after 30 years!

I do that in reality daily. It really works :)

Rich Man Poor Man. (1976)

Taken from the bestselling novel by Irwin Shaw! It is a classic and very realistic spawning 23 years of the Jordache brothers 1945-1968.
50 Million viewers! For 1976 that was extremely high!
You can only get it in Europe on region 2. Crazy isn't it? But it's WORTH IT!

Eolake Stobblehouse said...

Region two *is* Europe.
the US is Region One. (Typically :)

I am just reading The Long Tail, and surprisingly, hit TV shows had *more* viewers in the seventies because of much smaller choice back then.

"I mean both versions of The Chocolate Factory lack warmth."

Well, too much warmth would melt the chocolate anyway. But essentially, I found they both displayed much creativity. And that I appreciate.

Now for some of the cool/fun quotes I remembered:

All of Rodney Dangerfield's films. Not exactly "cool", but side-splitting funny! That was a great comedian. Respect, man.

"There's a naked lady outside." (Little kid to his friend, Charlie's Angels)
Plus, the lady was Drew Barrymore. More!!! :-)

Callahan: I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?
[Thief surrenders]
Thief: I gots to know!
[Callahan pulls the trigger, but the gun just clicks on an empty chamber]

(Inspector H. Callahan, in "Dirty Harry")

"Say hello to my two little friends." (Al Pacino, somewhere.)

"Somebody stop me!"
The Mask.

I am reminded of a joke I heard some 20 years ago, during the war:

Two Lebanese drivers have a slight accident in Beirut.
DRIVER 1: You were the one in fault!
DRIVER 2 [pulls a pistol from his vest]: My insurance expert says it was YOUR fault.
DRIVER 1 [pulls a kalashnikov from his car]: Well, MY insurance expert sees it otherwise.
DRIVER 2: Hey, you know what? My expert fully agrees with what your expert said!

(Ethnic humor, yo.)

Say, this new software makes the letter-recognition markedly less user-friendly. :-P

How so? (I dont' see it anymore, being the owner.)

Much as I dislike the violence approach, those Clint quotes are cool.
And of course: "Go ahead, make my day."

Of course.

About the letters, most of the time I have to try twice for the post to go ahead. They make my day grumpy. FDJRK!
