Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
I've just tried to watch Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
Holy cow, what a bad movie.
You'd think when somebody adapted thirties pulp fiction and movies, they would take the best aspects of them... well not this producer. Just for example he adopted the absolutely dreadful movie music they always used in those days without changing a note.
Basically he managed to make a movie involving Gwyneth Paltrow and Giovanni Ribisi (both excellent actors) and giant robots (which should be right up my alley), and make it boring! I woulda thunk it impossible.
This movie is the pinnacle of badness, it takes the bad side of bad and makes it look good by comparison. It's the flea on the cockroach on the king of badness. If Bad was light, this would be a supernova. It's so bad it dreams of aspiring to suck.
... OK, maybe not that bad, but lord it's not good.
(I better fess up, the above paragraph was a joke stolen from the old comic strip Bloom County. The penguin Opus as a movie reviewer.) (Rewritten though, since I only clearly remembered the punch line.)
Huh. I thought it was kinda cute, actually. :) Very tongue in cheek sort of thing.
ReplyDeleteWhat's interesting about the film is how it was made. I understand it is bluescreen throughout.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like it.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures irritated me almost as much as the music. Every frame looked like a bad painting.
It's funny, if you described the movie it sounds like something I'd really like, but it just rubbed me the wrong way all over.
I loved that movie! It was so cheesy. The whole thing looked like a video game cinematic. I went in expecting a bad hommage to 30's pulp movies and thats exactly what I got. It was so bad it was almost parody.
ReplyDeleteThen again, I still love the Rocket Robin Hood cartoons, which everyone assures me are horrid.
I think they are running out of material myself. Case in point: Look at all the hollywood sequels coming out these days.
ReplyDeleteAnd How many times can they revamp King Kong.........PLEASE ENOUGH ALREADY with the ape and the girl in NYC! BORING!
Now we have prequels as well. Star Wars or Star Bores As I see it. Somebody wake me when it's over. (My dreams are more entertaining and all they cost me is a days toil of work from being worn out.)
Sleep tight and don't mind the bedbugs, they don't bite lol.
Leviathud,
ReplyDeleteYou've nabbed it. If you like cheese, you'll like that movie.
"I went in expecting a bad hommage to 30's pulp movies and thats exactly what I got. It was so bad it was almost parody."
I must confess I haven't seen it yet, but I understand this is exactly how it was intended : a cheesy, tongue-in-cheek parody.
I know, these are very hard to pull off successfully. Almost reminds me of movies dealing with taboo subjects, you KNOW a lot of people will talk about it, and many will just hate it.
Eolake,
ReplyDeleteJust to give me a reference (because I haven't seen SC&tWoT), how to you rate Pirates of the Caribbean? (The first one?)
You know, to compare what's comparable.
I enjoyed that.
