I think that good singers unconsciously duplicates what they hear. I heard many years ago about a little Italian girl who was singing the theme to Pippi Longstocking in perfect Swedish, even though she had no clue what the words meant!
Another thing is that good actors are often spookily good with mimicking accents. (And some just can't, even good ones.)
It's interesting how with British singers the accent often disappears when singing.
