90210?

I just noticed there's a 90210 show on TV. I could'na believe it, my sister was a fan of that show over 20 years ago!
But apparently it is the forth series in the "franchise".

Now like then, the actors seem too old to be in high school. And now, man, how thin are some of those girls!? (One of them shown on the right.) Damn, they're barely even attractive. It seems like the bigger the obesity percentage grows, the more people over-compensate in the fashion- and now the entertainment-business.
While I'm being gratuitously critical, none of the actors are exactly overflowing with personality either. But maybe it goes with the bubble-gum tween-twit TV show genre. The characters they portray are the rich and popular kids, and if one of them were to be burdened by a personality, he would be out in the cold faster than you can say "fake tan".

I have seen one show in the genre which I liked though, I wish I could remember the title, but it had ironic distance and was funny, because it was a parody of the culture and intrigue which goes on behind the scenes of a TV show like it.
Update: it was Grosse Point.

They should have learned from Degrassi, which always cast actors who were the age of the characters.

Are you thinking of Melrose Place, the Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off? It was a more ridiculous, soapy cartoon in comparison to 90210. Melrose's big drawing card was Heather Locklear who personified "Bitch" to unequaled heights.

    Sound cool.

But no, it was a short-lived, less known show, I think only one full season. No famous actors.
... Aha! It was called Grosse Pointe.

  4. Grosse Pointe was good but since it was a parody wasn't really in the genre. Rumor is it got cancelled because they were making fun of Tori Spelling (which admittedly is like shooting fish in a barrel).

("Thank you!" lol! :-) It seems that the pic that you attached is from 2007. She was only 20, then.

She seems to have filled out a bit, since then. (Done a pretty creepy movie, since then, as well! Yuck!)

Heather Locklear's having a pretty tough time, these days. :-(

  6. Yeah, that film looks grim.

I was just checking out a TV show, American Horror I think it was. It had pretty explicit pictures of a naked woman in a ditch, cut up in pieces. In a TV show! Urgh.

Yeah. I don't get the attraction to even be part of such nuttiness! It's just disgusting and unnecessary! Why can't we, as a society, embrace positive, beautiful, and meaningful things to do films on?! If we don't watch these types of things, they wouldn't exist; that simple!

Yuck! Sick! And...people wonder why there's SO MANY PSYCHOs running around doing the HORRIBLE things that they do to themselves and others!! It's, like, it needs to be a more [sensationally] "horrific experience" each time, in order to capture a "bored" audience! WAY SAD...and DISGUSTING state of affairs, again! :-(

  8. "And...people wonder why there's SO MANY PSYCHOs running around doing the HORRIBLE things that they do to themselves and others!!"

-_- Well, there is an actual reason why people do those things, and that's not it. And as long as we keep acting like that's the reason, we're ignoring the real reason, and those things are going to keep happening.

    Very true.

Excluding the mentally ill and the demon-possessed (which most don't even believe is possible), what is your theory, Jes? I'm, basically, just saying: "why even make an effort and spend all that money and waste all those actor's talents and time on such STUPID matters?!"

That's interesting. I always think that it helps to FEED that sort of mind play; like to help to solidify such imaginings; unnecessary images that are fed to this sort of [demented] "longing."

  13. Well, I've heard statistics saying that rapists, for instance, overwhelmingly comes from repressed backgrounds where porn and such is very taboo.

And I've always understood rape to be a form of control and, ironically, absolutely nothing to do with sex.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to get to the bottom of these mysteries...so that a solution could be implemented and these issues could be done away with, for good?! What a concept! :-)

  15. Yeah, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Not only is there violence anywhere there are humans, there's violence anywhere there's *life*. Think about it, in order to survive, you have to eat, meaning kill something, even if only plant life.

  16. Well, people don't understand that a person can only take so much before they start to break. Feeling like the world doesn't want you isn't easy. Being alone all the time with nothing but your thoughts to keep you company isn't easy. It's easier to overcome life's challenges when you got someone to share them with. But if you don't, you're just left to process those feelings by yourself, and you start thinking weird things. You feel like the world doesn't want you, you start feeling like you don't want the world, and then you start thinking about acting on those feelings.

I'm sorry if I'm coming across a little aggressive, but this using the media as a scapegoat for violence is one of the few things that legitimately offends me. These things keep happening, and it's always the same story. Quiet, anti-social, bullied. And the people never learn. The only thing they ever come up with is, "Well, did he play video games?" As if people don't have problems in real life! It's a really bad joke.

And yes, it exorcises demons. Thank God I'm able to express those things, or I might go crazy myself. So yeah, that's my theory.

I hate it when people just make shit up and then decide to treat it as fact. Any evidence to back this up? No?! I'm shocked.

  18. These things keep happening, and it's always the same story. Quiet, anti-social, bullied.

Yet there are plenty of people who are like that but nothing happens. They don't go on a killing spree. Maybe the ones that do it's like a perfect storm - quiet, anti-social, bullied, and already unstable.

The only thing they ever come up with is, "Well, did he play video games?"

In the Fifties it was comic book especially horror comics. Obviously a keen interest in horror as well as being quiet, anti-social, bullied, and add unathletic doesn't turn someone into a killer - I just described a young Mark Gatiss.

  19. and the demon-possessed (which most don't even believe is possible)

Demons would have to exist for it to be possible.

  20. "Yet there are plenty of people who are like that but nothing happens."

Yep, and I'm one of them. This is another thing people forget, is personal responsibility has to enter the equation at some point. Eventually, we have to stop looking for something to blame and say, "This person made a conscious decision to do horrible things."

I'm not gonna deny that a person with violent feelings is gonna be fascinated by stuff like that, obviously they will be. But for me, the idea that those things CAUSE that behavior just seems hopelessly naive. A part of me almost feels jealous of people who can think that. They've obviously never had to tolerate the things I have.

Jes...I don't think ALL are cases where people are functioning on a conscious, decision-making level and I don't "blame" ALL on the movie-making industry.

Well, people don't understand that a person can only take so much before they start to break.

I think a LOT of people have had a LOT of shit done to them and, STILL, don't become "monsters." Not everyone breaks, mentally.

Feeling like the world doesn't want you isn't easy. Being alone all the time with nothing but your thoughts to keep you company isn't easy.

That's a choice, as well: to be alone or to make an effort to reach out, in the world; become part of the world. It doesn't have to be in some earth-shattering way. Get involved with volunteering. That gets you out of your own mind, REALLY QUICKLY! Join a group of people with similar interests. There are thousands of ideas! :-)

It's easier to overcome life's challenges when you got someone to share them with.

I totally agree! It makes life a HECK of a LOT more bearable! :-)

But if you don't, you're just left to process those feelings by yourself, and you start thinking weird things.

I totally get what you're saying, Jes! I do!

You feel like the world doesn't want you, you start feeling like you don't want the world, and then you start thinking about acting on those feelings.

A person can choose to stop the spiral of "crazy talk" and push through it. Again...it's a choice! Yes, it takes an effort but try to find things that you enjoy doing; go to places that make you forget all that nutty crazy talk! Look around you and try to find beautiful things to enjoy! Listen to positive messages, etc. IF you CHOOSE to LOOK for alternatives, you WILL find them!

I'm sorry if I'm coming across a little aggressive,

You're fine! It's your opinion. No big deal!

...but this using the media as a scapegoat for violence is one of the few things that legitimately offends me.

I think it's irresponsible to say that it doesn't have [at least] some affect on people's psyche! But...of course, as stated, above, I wouldn't put ALL cases in the same, um, basket! And...I have to say that it really offends me that I can barely find a damn movie that isn't 90% violence! That pisses me off! :-(

These things keep happening, and it's always the same story. Quiet, anti-social, bullied. And the people never learn. The only thing they ever come up with is, "Well, did he play video games?" As if people don't have problems in real life! It's a really bad joke.

I agree: to try to say that it is just from having watched shit on t.v. or played shit video games...that would be total denial. I believe much of what goes on is the repression of much anger, etc., that some, eventually, choose to act upon in a destructive way. And...it seems as though MANY ENJOY MUCH of the violence that many of the movies portray; otherwise, there wouldn't be so much violence in movies!!

A person could also choose to go and talk with someone about their anger or frustrations but...I guess pride trumps being vulnerable and reaching out in a more mature way than "having it out" by cutting someone to pieces or whatever grossness they decide they are going to do. But...there, again, there are people who are mentally ill and...that thought probably wouldn't cross their minds to do, beforehand, neither. :-(

  22. Well, I agree with most of what you're saying. You're giving some good advice, but the problem is, I'm the wrong person to be giving it to. It's not as if people want to be alone, they didn't choose to be born into this, they just don't know what to do about it. I was lucky, I was able to fight my way out of it. But it's been a long ass journey, and I remember how hellaciously overwhelming it seemed in the beginning. The bottom line is people are eventually gonna have to learn to take better care of each other.

And besides all that...I think some(not all, but some) of the people who do these things are just mentally unstable to begin with. They're just missing that something inside them that makes most people care about other people. And the scary thing is, they look like everyone else.

And furthermore! I think in some ways violence is just something that's part of being human. Think about how easy it was for Hitler to find people to do the horrible things he wanted done. They just needed an excuse. It's like Eolake said earlier, nature demands that we kill in order to survive. We were hunters for a hundred thousand years, so it's not so easy to turn off those emotions now that we're civilized. At least with movies and stuff, we get a harmless outlet for those feelings.

Lol, its funny that we should even be talking about this, cause I've been trying to write a book lately that uses this theme as its main subject. Why do people become violent? Now if only I had the attention span to finish it...

  23. Sigh, an attention span must be nice to have...

I think in some ways violence is just something that's part of being human. Think about how easy it was for Hitler to find people to do the horrible things he wanted done.

    Yes indeed.
And probably there's hardly a country on earth which has not been at war in recent history.

  24. It's funny, if you read about Chimpanzees, we're a lot like them. Very aggressive, fighting over territory, mates, and food...fighting sometimes for no reason at all, but just because of the high level of aggression. I can't help but think we haven't evolved all that much - the bigger brains are used for many great things but we're still enslaved by our baser natures.

Think how much better society would be if we were like the Bonobo Chimpanzee?

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's funny you should mention Chimpanzees. Some people figure Jes looks like a penis, but I figure he looks more like a Chimp who's been put in clothes and strategically shaved. Not strategically enough, or they wouldn't have left that ridiculous facial hair. That and the glasses are an attempt to distract from his fugliness I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  26. And probably there's hardly a country on earth which has not been at war in recent history.

That's a misleading statement. You should differentiate between countries that wage aggressive wars and countries that merely defend themselves from invaders.

Iran, for example, has not attacked any country in 300 years. This makes her one of the most peaceful nations on the planet. In contrast, US has been involved in aggressive wars almost uninterrupted since WWII. This makes US the #1 rogue nation on the planet.

If you research the matter, you'll find that the wars in recent history have been started by very few countries. The rest of the planet have been essentially peaceful.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Fair point.

Not really. It's pretty misleading. When you're the top dog you have different responsibilities. Finland has never been in that position.

It's easy to confuse stupid people. I could tell you that Iceland has the most Nobel Prize winners, per capita, of any country. That's true, but only because of Iceland's small population. There's only been one Icelandic Nobel Prize winner. The U.S. doesn't look too good in Timo's example but the reality is a bit different - which I think he implied, but Eolake doesn't seem to have got it.

I wasn't sure if you were talking about yourself or just in general; hence, what I wrote was written so it could go either way. :-)

I don't think any of us ask to be born into...anything; we just are. And...I agree: "What to do about it?" That's the toughest question...when you don't have the support of loving parents/family/friends.

I was lucky, I was able to fight my way out of it. But it's been a long ass journey, and I remember how hellaciously overwhelming it seemed in the beginning.

I'm very glad to hear that you fought the good fight to get out of that funky feeling.

The bottom line is people are eventually gonna have to learn to take better care of each other.

I completely agree, Jes! This "everyone for themselves" shit is so totally stupid and selfish! We ALL need to learn to take better care of our neighbor...like ourselves!

And besides all that...I think some(not all, but some) of the people who do these things are just mentally unstable to begin with. They're just missing that something inside them that makes most people care about other people. And the scary thing is, they look like everyone else.

I agree. Sometimes, that is probably the case. Often, even, perhaps.

Everyone has a different "story." I believe in the 'Fall of Man.' Hopefully, someday, we will ALL know the Reason for ALL that we have ALL had to go through in this life!

At least with movies and stuff, we get a harmless outlet for those feelings.

Not so sure they're as "harmless" as they would lead us to believe that they are. I was on this site, looking for something else, when I came upon this interview of a school killer. He says differently.

Lol, its funny that we should even be talking about this, cause I've been trying to write a book lately that uses this theme as its main subject. Why do people become violent?

Interesting. I do hope that you continue on your pursuit of this study. I think it's an important one. I, definitely, think that there is a LOT of research material for such a subject!

Now if only I had the attention span to finish it...

Trust me; I can relate! Hang in there!

BTW: I thought of this conversation, the other day, when I saw this bumper sticker: "I knit so I don't kill people!" Oh boy! What is the world coming to?! :-/
