Me too. When I live in Edingburgh in 2000, I was working on a "gates of Edinburgh" series, because the city is shock full of these old iron gates. Some of them lead nowhere because the garden behind them is overgrown with trees and such, so you can't even open the gate!
Thanks, Russ! Coming from you, that's a great compliment! From a couple of days ago, when we had that 23-degree weather! Sure dipping down there, again, tonight! :-( Wishing I had a fish-eye, tonight! I was looking @ that moon, tonight, w/those stars and seeing the rim of evergreens all around; it would have been fun...if I knew how to crank something like that out! lol! :-D
I haven't been on your Flickr page for way too long, now. Your shots are very cool! I, particularly, love the waterfall/stream stuff. Yet another thing I want to learn. :-)
Oh thanks, dood! Especially coming from an up and coming 'Rock Star,' I'll take that as a compliment, as well! ;-) (Read your blog, the other night. :-) You're funny! :-D
Eolake said... "Oh ya, I just took a peek at Russ's photos, very nice. Eye for compositions."
Yeah. Really nice! One wouldn't even need to go anywhere to enjoy a nice outdoor scene of the beach or forest! :-P (nice if it's too cold to go outside; or...if a person is bed-bound...like an elderly person.)
Thanks Eolake and TC[Girl] for the kind words. Speaking of cold weather, I plan on getting up at 5am tomorrow to catch the total eclipse of the moon. I'm sure I'll be clapping my hands and jumping up and down between exposures! ;-)
I just noticed re: that eclipse! Better you than me! :-P (I did my "time" doing these shots, the other day! Almost froze my fingers off! Several hours' worth of time out there.)
I would highly recommend: snow pants and...the mitts where the top pops off to expose the finger tips. I should have had some of those, the other day!
Stay warm! Looking forward to seeing the pictures! :-D
... I've ordered a pair. About time my 20-year old gloves got replaced anyhow! (Though I don't think I can throw them out, they are still in good shape, sometimes I have amazing luck with the longevity of the things I buy.)
They are all excellent. I like the ducks best of all. The bursts of color surrounded by all that grey!
While it wouldn't work like a fisheye lens for your Moon shot you should really checkout Microsoft's ICE program (probably only for Windows though). It will stitch together hundreds of overlapping photos presented to it in any order to make a huge composite picture. Not just left to right stitching like most panorama stitching programs but two dimensional stitching: left-right and up-down.
On second thought, maybe the stars would provide enough reference points to stitch your proposed Moon and stars images.
It also seems to do some work matching the exposure across all the photos. You can chose between cylindrical, perspective and spherical projections.
I was a bit surprised when I was just out at midnight: ice on some water. But unlike most of this week, the wind had died down, so it didn't feel too durn cold. (We've had so much storm this week.)
Alex said... "I'll stop being a wimp. I thought it was cold when I took some night photos of the Bay Bridge. It was in the 50's and I needed to put a coat on.
Glad it warmed up again, back in the 60's now."
Quit bragging! lol! You don't know how much I MISS the California..."winters!" What I wouldn't give for a 60, anytime soon! :-( (I guess I'll have to find my way around to your blog, now, to see those bridge pics, hey, Alex? Homesick for the Bay, as well! Had I stayed back there, I'd probably have been sailing on the Bay, every weekend! Yet another thing I miss!) :-(
Russ: Honestly, I have NEVER seen those kinds of gloves, before! They look AWESOME! I was thinking of the little knitted kind (OK. Admittedly, probably not your color, but...you get the idea!) but, dang...I'm impressed! The ones you found look AMAZING! And...of COURSE you don't need to expose more than the thumb and one finger! Great idea!
So...you have to tell: did you have any luck seeing the eclipse? Reports had it still foggy and unable to see the moon. Did you experience same?
Eolake said... "... I've ordered a pair. About time my 20-year old gloves got replaced anyhow! (Though I don't think I can throw them out, they are still in good shape, sometimes I have amazing luck with the longevity of the things I buy.)"
Probably 'cuz you buy quality and don't use them too often? :-) They can be nice for a back-up or...if you don't really want them "hanging around," any longer, I wonder if you guys have "second-hand" stores, where people give things to that they don't want/need. :-)
Wha! I used to live right by the Dumbarton! (Newark) I miss that area a LOT! Nice shots! LOVE the airplane trails and the color on the bottom one (where it looks like a couple of planets are out, right behind there, isn't it?)!
Would you go get me a couple of Chilean Sea Bass steaks, at the Asian Market, Dude? We live about the same distance from the coast, here, but it's like pulling teeth to get any decent fish around here! No Asian markets! :-(
OK. Just looked @ the Embarcadero! OK, Dude...you are making me HOMESICK for a festive place to be! LOVE your night shots! Are you using the D80 to do these?
Thanks for sharing, Alex; and...what the heck are you still doing up?! Don't you have your day job, anymore?! ;-) (you're as bad as me; I, practically, stay up, around the clock, these days! I'll sleep when I'm dead! lol! :-/
Alex: did you shoot these from the Alameda Marina? (Looks too far north to be Treasure Island...methinks. Almost been 8 years, now, though, so...memory not quite as sharp! lol!)
Alex said... "I lost one day job, when Cisco closed down Flip, but have a new one making TV broadcast equipment."

"$200 category in 'Photography:' "Implement used to do timed exposures."] and haven't been able to figure out how to use it, yet! :-( You sure look like you've got it figured out! :-D
Opened up the iris, choose a fast film emulation, and the camera can do shutter speeds down to 30 s, good job too, I left my cable release at home. Shot raw + jpeg and did a little lightroom on some.
"I wonder if you guys have "second-hand" stores, where people give things to that they don't want/need."
Sure, they call them "charity shops" here, like the Heart Foundation's one for example. There are a couple in town. I've sometimes given heaps of books and films to them.
@ Anon: Thank you very much...for your compliment and recommendation. You are the second person to recommend ICE to me; must mean I need to get with it! ;-)
Have you clicked on the duck picture and then zoomed in, w/the little magnifying lens, to see the beautiful, rich colors of those tiny feathers of their wings, on their sides? The left duck's wing's color is more blue and the right guy has a combination of blue and purple; and...also the left one has the white ring around his neck whereas the right one does not. I just thought that was kind of interesting/fun to note, myself. :-D
On the first one, Anon? Could be. That or...some spots on the UV filter that I always have on.
I was just noticing a line across the bottom one, as well. Hadn't noticed that, before, neither. I think that probably ends up being the power line that Eo helped me get rid of. I had completely forgotten about those power lines! lol! :-)
TC said: "So...you have to tell: did you have any luck seeing the eclipse? Reports had it still foggy and unable to see the moon. Did you experience same?"

No but...perhaps being able to pop the little tops on, every once in awhile, would have prevented the frozen fingers, no? Otherwise, what the heck is the purpose of having even bothered to include them?! :-(
Yeah, you really can't twirl the knobs and command wheels on your camera unless you have the little tops off. No sense in putting them back on until the photo session is finished... and by then they're numb. As long as they don't turn black and fall off, it's all good! ;-)
Well...that's the very thing that prevents me from even wanting to step outside the door for MANY months of the year; namely, getting COLD!
