Gervais slapstick

I don't watch stuff like Golden Globes, but I looked it up because I was about to watch a talkshow with Johnny Depp on, and Ricky Gervais was on there too, and this was brought up.
I always felt Ricky was a slimy character, almost creepy, and this didn't change my mind.       :-)

Really, like Robert Downey Jr says here about the tone of Gervais' presentation: "hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones". You can't help but laugh sometimes, but he really is revoltingly venomous and hateful under his slick, handsome smile.
(That RDJ is pretty revolting too here is another matter.)

  1. There's a time and place for that sort of comedy and...usually, the people being grilled aren't in the room...scrutinized by their peers! :-/ He was TACKY! That's almost as bad as being humiliated in a school classroom, as a kid!! The Golden Globes used to be a rather classy affair! I'm quite surprised by this.

I even had to look him up to see who he was, at first! I had only ever seen his name, before this, and then, I'm wondering why a British comedian was hosting an American event! lol! Times are sure a-changing! Pretty disappointing material! I've winced at American comedians hosting, as well, so... :-(

And, yeah, RDJ disappointed, as well, but...sure ran along the same vein of tackiness as Gervais! I woulda expected better from him, after how tough things have been for him in not too distant of a past! I still want to see his and Jude Law's 'Sherlock Holmes.'

  2. Come on, Ricky is the hillest man in the business. Especially now that the Fryster is no longer doing comedy.

This, in fact, was already the second time he was asked to do Golden Globes (so he must have done something right the first time), and this second appearance of his was nominated for an Emmy!

Like Ricky says, these are the richest and most privileged people on earth. If you can't make jokes about them, something is terribly wrong.

Do you even recall any of the previous Golden Globes presenters? Me neither.

Here's Letterman's take on that performance.

This is Piers Morgan interviewing Ricky a few days after the event.

  3. Oh no, just after I've defended Ricky, I come across this article.

Funny or not, the guy is a despicable idiot.

  4. Well, I can agree that the hugely self-congratulatory nature of Hollywood could stand to be taken down a notch. Or ten, or thirty.

He just creeps me out, is all. And I've tried Extras and The Office, and overall I find them more confusing and embarrassing than funny.

  5. He was very good in Ghost Town though.

  6. So, Ricky has just been invited to host the Globes for the third time!

“This year I'm going to make sure their offence is completely justified”, Gervais comments.

Meanwhile, here is a hilariouz clip of him as David Brent. Or an attempt anyway.

  7. I wonder how much of the Globes speech he wrote himself. Usually they have a team of writers working on these things.

  8. He says he wrote it all by himself.
