What are you talking about? When did I say I had only heard of it now? Everyone has seen that movie. It's one, along a few others like Akira or Ghost in the Shell, that are used as an intro to anime. It's the bare minimum.
Take it as a rule of thumb - if you've seen, read it, listened to it - then everyone has.
Although you like to think of yourself as an individualist, you're not. You're not a bohemian either.
I'm not much into anime but I too have seen My Neighbor Totoro as well as Akira which came out in the same year I think. I probably didn't seem them till 1990 or 1991. Still, I do think those are pretty well known. I know that Comic Book Guy types who are really into anime would scoff and say "Everyone's heard of _________, have you heard of _____________? Didn't think so!"
I didn't see Totoro until about 2002. However it seems that the new 2-disc special edition on Amazon isn't worth it. Based on several 1-star reviews there's no Japanese audio for the thing.
I'm disappointed to not yet see blu-ray versions. They are so visually rich, and animation, whether flat or CGI, tends to look great in HD. Even the durn Simpsons looks good in HD.
If you've heard of it I have a feeling there are very few who haven't. You're very conventional.
ReplyDeleteI first watched Totoro almost twenty years ago. And you only hear of them now? Wow, git bizi, man, your beeeehind.
