Desperate, sure, otherwise he would not have taken the risk of producing art which then was illegal. But I don't see anything wrong about it. It is art after all. And like the philosopher said: "no human experience is alien to me."
I think they all pretty much did that stuff back in the day. Look at some of the work of Wally Wood, or the pin-up stuff of Dan DeCarlo (of Archie Comics). Based on the Stan Lee quote, either Stan is a real prude or it's some pretty raw work.

ReplyDeleteStan Lee can't be a prude. Perhaps a little hypocritical since so many of his own works featured women like Sue Storm and kids like Jubilee being gassed, stunned, carried off by thugs, tied up and otherwise interfered with.
ReplyDeleteYou can't work in comics without having a little kink in your soul. And deep down, comic book artists are and were all DOMs at heart.

ReplyDeleteHardly. I don't remember Doctor Doom forcing Sue Storm to strip down to her bra and panties and hang her by chains over a bunch of big spikes. As one example.
