Russia in color, a century ago

[Thanks to Ian P]

Russia in color, a century ago, picture article.

Wow, talk about a time when color photography was rare! There was not even any color film a century ago. This was insanely tricky work.

I really like the Boston Globe's work in reversing the idea that news photos on the web must be really tiny, for the lowest common denominator. Their feature The Big Picture is very popular. (Odd I haven't heard of any imitators.)

  1. WOW, the images are amazing. It's sad though, no one was smiling. I saw a hint of one, but otherwise none. Life must have been extremely hard on them.

  2. I made the acquaintance of a young Russian lady and remembered this post and wanted to share some of these photos with her. Going through the comments of the original article I discovered a link to a Russian website that houses hundreds of them.
They still need to work on their web development, but it was simple enough to navigate. You can even use Google to translate the page though it's not necessary to simply enjoy the photos.

  3. Tiny URL because it seems blogger isn't displaying the whole link.
