Now, if something along these lines had been inbuilt originally, I would possibly have seen more point to the iPad. I have nothing against them per se ... daughter wanted and got one as a belated birthday gift from me (or perhaps it was early for next year?:-) ) ... they just occur to me as being a device that excels at nothing in particular (* dons hardhat and awaits incoming*) apart from an effective marketing strategy. First thing my daughter wanted to do, quite naturally, was show it to me, or to be more specific, show me some of the photos she had put on there from her recent travels after she was married ... and herein lies problem number one ... we're sat at a nice sunny table outside a pub: can you actually see ANYTHING on the screen??? Take a wild guess :-) Hmmm ... a portable device, apparently developed with the prime function of allowing you to read etc 'on the go' ... and it's unusable in anything like bright light! Trades and Descriptions act anyone?:-)

Good one and...the hardhat might come in handy. ;-)
"...and it's unusable in anything like bright light!"
Seems like a problem for *most* such screens...even digital cameras; way annoying, I agree.
Things are creepily quiet from the Apple-ites, who are normally as keen as mustard to defend their toys to the death, right or wrong. Philocalist, you seem to have touched on a sore point that is maybe too close to the truth.
No doubt someone will be along shortly with a cry of 'Heretic', but for almost 36 hours you seem to have accomplished something that sees most others fail:- shutting the self-righteous buggers up for a bit, perhaps into an embarassed silence? ROFLMAO!
Well, I thought counter-arguments were too obvious. But it seems not.
Just one viewpoint is: it's a *way* better ebook reader than the Kindle DX (excepting if you like sitting in the sun reading), it's much faster, it's barely more expensive, and it can do 500 things the Kindle can't.
