The Konrath effect

The Konrath Effect: Will New Technology Ruin Talented Authors?, an interesting article about the ease of self-publishing these days.

  1. I like this news. Now all the bad writers can just throw their books up places like that, and all the idiots who bought Kindles can read them. Leave the internet to talentless douches like Ganesha Games.

  2. Yep, that will leave you in peace with the Babara Cartland books.

  3. I have never heard of Barbara Cartland. I had to look the name up. You must be a fag if you've even heard of her. Then again you're Danish so of course you're a fag. Add to that lazy, stupid, and fat. Yeah, you've got it going on.

Yes, opening up publishing (like opening up recording) allows for more folks of marginal talent to produce and promote their wares. It also reduces the influence of traditional gatekeepers, and allows for new sources of authority. There's a lot of now-popular music and bands that would not have gotten label backing (let alone recording contracts or airplay) if the old structure had not been blown away by the ability to inexpensively record and distribute music. Publishing will follow much the same path, and suffer many similar problems. But I think that already we are seeing writers and artists who would not have been published in a "dead-tree" world. Not because they are bad, but because they don't fit neatly into the predefined boxes that the publishing world is accustomed to using, or because they are not the "type" that is currently perceived to be in vogue.
Ms. Cartland, and many of the other writers of the formulaic kind should be regarded as excellent providers of what their audiences wanted to read. It may not be "art", but it still fills a desire.

  5. Well, I know I haven't been impressed by these self-published guys so far. As the article says, while there are a few good writers who get rejected unfairly, the majority deserve it. I'd like to know who these bands are you're talking about, too. I bet few have ever heard of them. But then I don't have your mammoth intellect, Grant, so you'll have to forgive me if I too come across as a twit. P.S. "neculturny" is only used by ignorant douches.

  6. Anonymous,
If you are so much above us internet losers, why do you spend so much time here? And pray tell me what of my work have you read or used?

  7. We're assuming that it's all the same guy. It might be that this blog just attracts these people. It's bound to be a bit more high profile than most. It certainly gets a lot more comments than 99% of the blogs out there run by the Joe Blows of the world.

P.S. I wonder if Blow is a real surname. Do you think you'd really fuck a kid up by naming him Joe if Blow was your last name?

  8. I'd be surprised if the great bulk of it isn't the same guy. it has a tone which is totally different from everybody else's.
