Tommy found these outstanding pictures from Iceland from the recent volcano event.

I think the Boston Globe has done a brilliant thing when they invented the Big Picture format, going against the dominant culture of minuscule pictures on the web, which caters only to those with the smallest monitors and the worst connections.
I was absolutely blown away by the ones with the lightening within the clouds. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteAs they say, don't fool with mother nature... :-)
While I, too, enjoyed the Boston Globe's pictures (huge monitor, lightning fast connection) and would like to stress that this is not in any way a contrarian view, I am disappointed after well over a decade of web development that image presentation is mostly no more sophisticated than it was back in the day.
ReplyDeleteJust slapping large images into web pages addresses only a part of the potential audience. I would like the captions in Swahili, and I would like to view the images on my iPhone: the first request may be unreasonable, but surely the second is not?
The technology for resizing to the viewport exists (my own websites routinely offer that facility) what is lacking are website designers addressing the hardware diversity of their audience.
@ aventin:
ReplyDeleteI betcha you couldn't Swa a hili if one jumped up and bit your ass!
The Good News is: Iceland is getting bigger. If this keeps up, one day it will be much closer to somewhere else. We aren't sure where, because that depends on which way it spreads.
The real estate people are fond of saying: "They're not making any more land!" The hell they aren't. How about Iceland and Hawaii?
Congratulations Eolake, you are one of the few people on the internet who can spell 'minuscule' correctly.
ReplyDeleteThats one thing wich make this sight such a good one.
ReplyDelete(That's a joke sentence.)
Ray, jinsi gani kuwa mtaalam wa namna hiyo kwa watu kamwe walikutana?
ReplyDeleteThese look like photos of R.A.F. criticizing one of your posts.
ReplyDelete"FAAAARRRRTTTT!!!!"
