New: Canon T2i (updated)

New: Canon T2i. Amazon link.
If you like megapixels, this is the ticket. Eighteen MP in an "entry-level" camera!
Even if one thinks this is overdoing it, as I tend to, I have learned that mucho megapixels, while not always the great advantage some think they are (very demanding of lenses for example), are not really a downside at least, and can be useful. In any case this is a hot camera for eight hundred bucks, that's for dang sure.

Update: it has full HD, and more importantly, takes an external microphone!

  1. I've used the 18mp 7D a little, and I assume the same sensor/software (for the most part) is in the T2i. All told, I was surprised by the 7D's low-light capability at ISO 3200, considering all the pixels. ISO 6400 was fair, but passable in a small print.

But I work on an aging Mac laptop, and 18mp slows me down. So I turned it down to the medium 8mp setting. Got a nice 18x24 print out of it, too.

I'll bet the T2i is a hell of a camera. But 18mp is flat-out ridiculous in an entry-level camera. Or any small-sensor SLR, in my opinion. The extra pixels are only in there for marketing bullet points, I fear.

  2. Yes, I agree.

    They are big files.
And up to 13x19 inches, 12MP is more than enough.

I think I heard that the sensor is not actually the same as in the 7D, although Canon has never put out a camera with a poor sensor.

  3. What makes this additionally killer is the whole video thing, Which could lure in potential high end camcorder shoppers as well...not to mention how a product like this FORCES the other manufacturers to really respond aggressively, which means in less than a year we'll all be tempted by entry-level on steroids (and growth hormones) offerings from Nikon, Pentax, Olympus. Sony will likely compensate by releasing 10 new sub-$1000 DSLRs--all without video

  4. Canon EOS 550D (Rebel T2i / Kiss X4 Digital)

This thing seems to have more AKAs than a Vegas hooker's rap sheet:

Ross doesn't seem too impressed with the light gathering abilities of such small pixels?

    Seriously doubtful of this camera.

  6. Not to step on Anon's toes, but AKA=Also Known As.

  7. I should also add it is usually a law enforcement term. Not as lofty as 'Nom de Plume'. Goes along with 'Rap Sheet' or list of known offenses.
As a person living in Las Vegas, I could take offense to the reference of our hookers, but I will pass. I am sure many have a long list of aka's and also rap sheets. I know none of them.

  8. Ah, thanks.
I knew a.k.a. used as a verb, but not a noun.
