BW Portrait Contest, results

So, here are the results of the BW Portrait Contest.
The quality level was very high, making it hard to judge, so I have decided to give two $100 prizes instead of one. And by astounding coincidence, these two wonderful photos have the model in virtually the same pose!

Walter S. won with this portrait of 'a girl and her dog':

And Michael H. won with this visually daring portrait of a goth girl:

And here are the Honorable Mentions:

(Note: I've decided to award all the honorable-mentions (those who are interested) a three-month membership in either Domai or GoddessNudes. Please email me.)

  1. Very nice work, and congratualtions to everyone for the fine photography. I'm sure the judging was hard. I also think it is interesting the number of photos that use or imitate the old toning processes such as sepia and selenium toning.

  2. Congratulations from here!
You´ve chosen well. I can imagine it wasn´t easy at all!

I feel there can never be an absolute winner. It will always be the result of the combination of giving (by the photographer) and receiving (by the jury).

The quality is high and one can sense the genius in every picture.

    Looking forward to future contests.

  3. LOVE the goth girl. I do have a weakness for goth girls anyway. Well, OK, any girls, but still- excellent!

  4. Thanks, guys.

Indeed, since there are so many factors that play into a good photo, it's the rare contest where everybody agrees about the winner. Well, that's life amongst things you can't measure with instruments!

  5. Yes...congratulations to ALL!! :-) Very nice portraits! Even a self-portrait, yes, 'Uncle Ron'? :-)

And...I agree with you, MP & Eo: "I feel there can never be an absolute winner." and "...that's life amongst things you can't measure with instruments!"

  6. A few people disagreed quite strongly with my selected winner in the Domai Art competition (here) a couple years ago. And they had their reasons, but well, you just have to accept that's the part of judging, some may disagree.

As in most of life, I tend to go with my intuition, rather than (for instance) give points for technique and for composition and for message, like they do in some camera clubs.

  7. I enjoyed it very much - even if I didn't win.

    How many entrants were there?

  8. A few dozen.

The Domai Art competition (which I premoted widely) had over a thousand! That was a lot of work, which is why I haven't done it since, yet.

  10. Yes, Bruce's was *very* close to being a winner also, I really like it. Great tones.

Bruce, if you want it, I'm awarding you a year's membership at Domai or GoddessNudes.

  11. Ah heck, I meant Daniel's just above. Well, it goes for both of them.

... And while I'm at it, why not a three-month membership at either site for any of the runner-ups who'd like one. Yes.

  14. I like Jeff R's self-portrait.

LOVE the goth girl. I do have a weakness for goth girls anyway.

Me too. Libertarians tend to have great taste all around.

  15. Libertarians tend to have great taste all around.

Do they? I guess that might make up for the low I.Q. No, wait, it doesn't.
