I looked up this lens, and I thought it was $1600, and I thought, dang, that's pretty expensive.
... And then I realized I was at Amazon UK, and it's 1600 Pounds Sterling!! Mother of god, that's an expensive lens.
... But of course, I save four pounds by shopping at Amazon...
... Holy fork, that's a big lens...

But if you were in the US you'd probably get _free shipping_! (g)

Good one, jbh!
ReplyDeleteYou made me curious, so I had to check. DO have a look a Amazon US before you order... or else, you will regret it!
Oh, I know. Back a few months ago, when the pound and the dollar was two to one, I would have def got it from the US. Now I might find it a bit cheaper here, and the dif then is not quite enough that I want to bother with the risk of import tax.
ReplyDeleteDear Eolake,
ReplyDeletefirst change your headline, then you chance your mind :-)
For example In Germany prices for an Canon or Nikon 85 / 1.8 are with 350 to 450 € not too expensive for most photopeople. For an 85 / 1.4 from Nikon you pay 850 to 1350 €. In the same price-region you can get a Zeiss-Lens with manual focus. But the Canon 85 / 1.2 is close to heaven with prices between 1700 and 2400 €. This is for an half aperture stop more light. The weigt is lovely 1025 grams (without the camera).
I actually use a 85 / 1.8 lens since years and do not miss anything. In the "Film-Decades" I loved to use a 85 / 2 manual focus for most of my photographs.
The day I have to picture "a black horse in a tunnel" is not come to now.
It is nice to see, what is possible (also the 50 / 0.95 Noctilux Leica for 8000 €) but I have too hard to work for the money ... ;-)
Yours Walter

ReplyDeleteshe smiled coyly as she turned sideways, and showed more leg....
My gawd, Walter, you're right, I'd written 1.8 in the headline. Silly me.
ReplyDeleteYou're also right, an 85mm 1.8 is much cheaper and smaller, and at least as good for most purposes.
I used one of those here:

One should only get the 1.2 (which is a full stop faster though) if one really needs the speed or the low DoF.
But I fell in love with a set on Domai:

It really is a different quality.
