No kidding. I am not sure what is the scarier thought: that most people prefer something overtly fake, or that most people can't tell the difference? I wonder which it is.
In my experience as a commercial photographer, retouching is carried out in order to correct small defects as well as create entirely new impressions of the image. For the sake of making an image appealing to a buying audience, a skilled retoucher is king. Here in recent modern times, people with Adobe Photoshop consider themselves retouchers. Being able to paste a moose where a mouse once stood isn't retouching. Real art is slowly going away.
