Mini-notebooks are taking off

Mini-notebooks are taking off.

"“This is for people who would have bought a desktop, but buy this to save money,” said Leslie Fiering, a vice president at the research firm Gartner."

Is this a stupid thing to say or what.

  1. There is a local supplier who carries the small Asus machines, they seem like a nice idea, but I really need screen real-estate for most of what I do. The keyboard was small, but usable.

I can't see anyone in my household being able to use one. DW is animating with Monkey Jam, and a short clip soon maxed out the 1GB ram she has. The kids are using Lucas/Lego software (Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones) which needs PixelPerfect capable graphics. My compiler is pretty lightweight, but my gaming preferences are Civilisation and Railroads.

I guess StarCraft and Warcraft II would play fine.

Most Java based web games the boys find already fall off the bottom of the screens we have on the laptops, (1200x800 and 1024x768). That 8.5" screen is tiny, and I assume is more 640x480 sized.

Still, to compose a Billy-do (billet deux), or simple surfing, e-mail, message board usage it should be fine. And you get faster download at Domai since you will only be looking at the low res thumbnails.

  2. I would like a notebook the size of the Panasonic R7.

But I want it to run OS X. It wouldn't replace my desktop but it would be something I could easily take with me.

  3. What I'd really like one day is an Airbook, but weighing only like 700 grams.
