Adolescent Sexuality blog

"This blog is an on-going conversation about adolescent sexuality, and all of the nuances and social issues inherent to the topic. I believe… that parents have to talk to their kids about sex… that everyone has sex, and should therefore know about sex."
- Adolescent Sexuality blog by Dr. Karen Rayne

Sounds like a healthy attitude. It is a mystery to me how the current US administration and apparently a big portion of the citizenry thinks that the way to protect somebody against mistakes in an area is to keep them ignorant about that area.

  1. I can't agree any more wholeheartedly with the good Dr.

Sooner or later, they're gonna have sex anyway, it's a natural urge, so every young person (even pre-adolescents) should be educated about sex.

I started having sex at the age of sixteen (actually, even earlier) and, though I don't blame anybody else, I made some mistakes (like catching VD) that maybe would (though I'm not very sure) have been avoided, had I'd been more knowledgeable about these matters (like maybe I would've used a condom, in the above occassion.

  2. That kind of talk can get you into trouble if you're the Surgeon General. Of course, she was fired by Bill Clinton - ha ha ha!

  3. A big portion of the citizenry might be an understatement actually. Adolescent sexuality is probably one of the most taboo subjects we have over here.

That would I guess be Jocelyn Elders. Take this from Wikipedia:

In 1994, she was invited to speak at a United Nations conference on AIDS. She was asked whether it would be appropriate to promote masturbation as a means of preventing young people from engaging in riskier forms of sexual activity, and she replied, "I think that it is part of human sexuality, and perhaps it should be taught." This remark caused great controversy and resulted in Elders losing the support of the White House. White House chief of staff Leon Panetta remarked, "There have been too many areas where the President does not agree with her views. This is just one too many."[1] Elders was fired by President Clinton as a result of the controversy in December of 1994.

Clinton might have approved, except he's more of a prop guy.

  6. I got her name wrong. It's Joycelyn, not Jocelyn, Elders. I find this quote of hers to be funny (because it's true):

"We know that more than 70 to 80% of women masturbate, and 90% of men masturbate, and the rest lie."[6]

  7. Statements such as Elders' help propagate taboos. What would it matter if 100% of us chose to masturbate? It is, of course, nothing that we "shouldn't" do, or that we "should" be reluctant to admit (lie about). Like sex itself, it's a natural urge (and it's even necessary and preferable at times). All part of being human.
