More on Denmark

If you aren't sick of Denmark yet, here is Tim Ferriss on Denmark.

If you read the comments under the article, it gets surreal. It's like people are talking about several radically different countries.

This guy sez Copenhagen has changed.

  1. I'm not sure about that list...I mean, the Swiss - as one person said in the comments - are not exactly jolly. The Swiss are among the most uptight people in the world.

I am not sure I would say the Danish are any better looking, on average, than any other people.

Besides, as cool as they seem to be about most things, hash still ain't legal there.

  2. Question: Do the cops in Denmark carry heat? I know they do not in Norway. At least I think it was Norway.

  3. I guess they do. I looked it up (http://www.politi.dk/en/equipment/) and they carry a 9 mm Heckler & Koch USP Compact. I don't know anything about guns, so I don't know how that compares to what police in other countries carry.

  4. I'm kinda interested in Denmark. I just re-read Michael Frayn's play about Nils Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, "Copenhagen". I also kinda had my curiosity piqued by "My Dirty Little Book of Stolen Time" by Liz Jensen.

I keep thinking "Confessions of an ugly step sister" was set there, but that was Holland wasn't it.

Denmark introduced to the phrase "leg godt" too.

  5. Joe, I don't think danish police on regular beat carry a gun. I don't recall seeing any. And bad violent crime is rare in Denmark, even in the capital.

  6. I think a lot of folks are recently "discovering" Denmark.

The thing that gets me, is, would I WANT to be surrounded by all those "beautiful" people? I'm personally NOT beautiful. I want to date beautiful women. I would like to SEE them walking around, all the time, yes; that beats the heck out of going to a mall in Florida and having to look at bloated obese young women! But I would also like to talk with and eventually TOUCH and FEEL them and that's highly unlikely. It seems to me that life in Denmark would be a rather frustrating experience ...

  7. Ah well, remember that post about the grossly obese guy who got one gorgeous woman after the other. It's your mind does it.

  8. That does seem to be the case. I went to high school with this guy who, though definitely not good looking, always had a beautiful girlfriend. No one knew how he did it. There were many much better looking guys who did not do as well.

  9. It's good that 80% of the people speak English. Saves me having to talk so loud.

  10. There is an advantage to learning Danish, though. You'd finally be able to understand what they're saying in those classic Color Climax videos.

  11. Probably many are Swedish. They've had a tremendous production.

I don't think I've seen any. But back when, I saw a couple of the Horoscope (Stjernetegn) movies, with famous Danish actors in the non-sexual parts. They were fun, as I recall. I'm amazed they got those stellar names to participate.

  12. I couldn't see it happening with American actors, although I can't see how it would damage say Brad Pitt's or George Clooney's reputation - only improve it if anything.

I have not heard Danish spoken much but it does sound nice, not like German which is very harsh to my ears. Then again I have not heard much German spoken either.

  13. I emailed that website - http://www.politi.dk/en/equipment/ - and just got back this reply:

"All danish policeofficers have an obligation to carry a gun, Heckler and
Koch USP Compact 9 mm., on duty in public. This goes for uniformed officers
    as well as investigators."

    Some dude called Niels-Otto Fisker,
    Advisor to the National Commisioner.

I would have thought they didn't carry guns, but I guess they do. I must say I am very surprised.

  14. Me too. DK is very peaceful.

But then you get surprised sometimes. Back in the nineties there were some riots where the police actually shot at the public!

  15. I had thought the Danish were a bit more civilized. They are going to be outdone by the Norwegians?! ;-)

  16. Well, at least they don't use the guns. Unless they're having a really bad day.

  17. They are using them more than they used to, though. From that website:

The Use of Police Firearms in Denmark
During 2006 four people were shot and killed by Danish police officers in four different incidents. It is far from every year that Danish police officers in the line of duty are caught up in a situation ending with the shooting and killing of a civilian. In the period 1996-2006 a total of 11 civilians were shot and killed by Danish police officers.

Although you've got to allow for the very small population of the country that is probably still quite low.

I'm sure it is still a very safe, peaceful country. I had just expected that the Danish would not arm their ordinary police officers. I had thought it would be more like England where only the English equivalent of the "swat team" were armed and your average Constable was not. Especially since the Norwegian police are not armed. I don't know about other European countries.

  18. Hmmm, I dunno, but I thought I heard many years ago that the bobbies are now armed.

  19. It's because of all the immigrants - at least the Muslim ones. France has the same problem. So does England. All they do is stir up trouble.
